How should I use my rebate check to prepare for the recession?
So far, I've penciled in:

-buy new vegetable seeds for my dad's gardens.
-buy a few more fruit trees to plant at my dad's farm
-buy a chest freezer to stock with produce this summer and fall from my dad's farm
-put the rest towards paying off my car (my only debt).

Any other suggestions for what do spend it on?

7. Stock up on durable products, especially food, you know you'll need. When
bread goes to 5 bucks a loaf, you'll have some in the freezer you paid 3 bucks for.

Your suggestions are good. Debt is an interesting thing, though. If you have debt and lets say you're paying 200 per month for your car. The 200 bucks you'll pay next year in deflated dollars are worth less than the 200 bucks you paid last year.

rice, beans, pasta, canned goods... and as someone on another thread suggested- toilet paper.

I am investing in metals...the kind with labels wrapped around them.

10. Buy guns. Use them to get more money.
Seriously, this is among the stupidest ideas the Bushies have ever had. I would use my rebate - if I even get anything worth folding - to help pay off my MasterCard, my main debt. Actually I may end up paying the taxes for an unemployed friend of mine; she's been jobless for four years, and her taxes are mainly her Social Security tax.

11. It is not really a REBATE CHECK YOU HAVE TO PAY IT BACK.
Whatever amount you receive in the form of a rebate check will be deducted from you income tax REFUND next year....go check out the front page of CNN on line and click the link. It tells you all about it.

12. Don't buy stuff that has "Made In China" stamped on it.
Buying gold was suggested earlier...If you can do so, it is not such a bad idea.

18. I really like the bicycle
idea. Unless this does turn out to just be an advance on our 2008 taxes in which case we better just save it so we can send it back. In any event, we are all going to have to pay it back to China because our government will have to take out a loan from them in order to "give" us the 'rebate'. And of course we, the tax payers, will have to pay China back with interest so the whole rebate idea is stupid.
