Some top CEOs swing a mean golf club
David R. Baker, Chronicle Staff Writer
Friday, February 8, 2008

The annual Pebble Beach golf tournament is in full swing this week and CEOs from across the country have descended on Northern California to test their driving and putting skills against some of the best pros in the sport.
Some of the executives have serious chops.
Richard Kovacevich, chairman of Wells Fargo & Co., boasts a handicap of 11.2. Fellow financier Charles Schwab's is 7.2, Sun Microsystems Chairman Scott McNealy has a 4.6 and Silicon Valley moneyman Frank Quattrone sports a 9.3.
How can you tell how well the country's captains of industry and finance play golf? Look them up online.
If they're serious about competition - and most top executives are - they'll post their scores on a computerized system that calculates the handicap of duffers throughout the land and posts the results online for anyone to see. The United States Golf Association provides the service.

Wow. Thank you, David R. Baker, for reporting on this. This is fascinating.

Don't you find this f*cking fascinating? Why it's almost scintillating.

Richard Kovacevich doesn't just run a major bank, he has a handicap of 11.2!

And you can rest assure that he works 1000 times harder, 1000 times longer, and has 1000 times more education than a typical employee.

He must, because he makes over 1000 times more - $72 mil. per year.

Then there's Charles Schwab. He runs some investment outfit.

And his handicap is 7.2! It just gets more fascinating all the time.

Schwab is white and rich, so he's obviously just brimming with genius and virtue, but he must not work as hard or be as smart as Kovacevich, because he only makes $22 mil.

Suck it, Schwab!

And the list of business luminaries goes on and on...

Wow. Pebble Beach is truly fortunate to have these fine men grace it with their presence.

And kudos to Baker for stroking their egos (and the egos of all the corporate suits reading who want to be them) with this piece! God knows, CEOs don't get nearly enough ego-stroking!

The sun is shining and the grass is green and clean at Pebble Beach and all is right with America.

I'm so glad that nothing icky like 1 million pending foreclosures or a dying middle class or a senseless war dampened their little GOLF GAME.

2. That is because they are diligent.
Despite the obligations of their VERY VERY IMPORTANT jobs, they make time to hit the links with other rich white men to polish up that game. They are the Renaissance men. I wish I was even worthy to be their caddy.

And in case it isn't coming through loud and clear...

:sarcasm:

4. do you realize how much BUSINESS is transacted on golf courses?
It's the perfect setup, really: you meet a prospective client, play a round of golf, have a meal, maybe a few drinks, and cut a million-dollar deal. Happens a lot.

6. You CAN buy a game too
mostly through equipment but proper teaching too .... oh and time.

That being said these guys aren't exactly wallflowers when it comes to being competitive either

3. What a waste.

I mean, David Baker could have just given these executives blowjobs, and then millions of trees would not have died for the paper it took to print this story.

7. If someone paid ME $millions to golf 3 times a week
I'd probably get to be good at it, too.
