Potter's smoking has anti-groups fuming


Daniel Radcliffe has been slammed by anti-smoking groups for lighting up on stage in London.

The Harry Potter star, 17, puffs on a cigarette during a special performance of his new show, Equus, the Daily Mail newspaper reports.

Amanda Sandford from anti-smoking organisation ASH, said: "It is regrettable that he is smoking, whatever the circumstances. He is a role model for young people and if he decided to take up smoking in real life that would be of great concern," the paper reported.

Radcliffe could be putting his health at risk, she claimed. "Even though it is an act, nicotine is highly addictive and he could find himself hooked," Mrs Sandford said.

With the play due to open on Tuesday, the other talking point to emerge from the show's previews has been the first signs of facial hair on the baby-faced actor. He was photographed leaving the theatre, sporting the first signs of a beard.

6. So what's gonna happen when they find out about the nude scene?

I mean things obviously have changed since my day, but my understanding is that when actors "smoke" and "drink" onstage they're usually using stage props rather than real cigarettes and booze. However, if this production, like many another production of Equus, is going to involve the protagonist spending a significant amount of time on stage naked as a jaybird, all of that is gonna have to be real.

Photos of Dan Radcliffe's nude seen in the play have already been all over the web. I read he received a standing ovation for his performance.
I'll give the kid credit. He obviously does not want to get type-cast. And he obviously wants to pursue something beyond Harry Potter, even as much as we may like the character. Let him expand.

The little kids in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone aren't kids anymore. I think that is the point of the whole story.

And to be a chauvinist pig, I am very curious as to how Emma Watson (Hermione Grainger) is going to fill out. (Wink, wink, wink)

Usually the guest actors on that show play either caricatures of themselves or just total jerks.

He was on recently and and played a horny jerk, also smoking. It was hilarious.

Actually between this and the nude shots, which I also saw, I'm thinking he's grown up to be pretty hot. I remember when my daughter had a crush on him when he was first Harry Potter, and I thought he was cute, but kind of a dork. He's growing up quite nicely...

I don't find smoking attractive, but that is one great photograph. Well shot.
