Question on two words in will.i.am's yes we can

I'm trying to transcribe the words of this so that I can use them in a history
class (after the elections).

I can't quite hear clearly in two places.


1. Near the beginning: "It was sung by immigrants as they swept our (nation's?) (distant?) shores"

2. Near the end: "And the hopes of the little girl who goes to the public school in (the village?)
