Record breaking heat where I'm at. I thought I had a fever until I checked the thermostat which was on heat and set for 60F and saw it was 74F.

Tornadoes to the north and west of me and the warnings keep going off.

This officially sucks. I want a refund.

10. Watch out for snakes.
It was so warm here in November that one of our little ones got bit by a snake right in our (admittedly rural) back yard.

I wasn't thinking about snakes in November.

Fang marks right on her muzzle, but she's fine now. My credit card isn't though, the emergency treatment cost $1000. Whew!

35. There's a blog called
folo that has been concerned lately with the Scruggs business in Mississippi. There are a lot of MS lawyers who chime in there with their insights and sightings of some of the actors, so it's very interesting. http://folo.wordpress.com

The blogger, Lotus, has a feature called "Our state is wusser than yours" in which there is a friendly competition in which Mississippians and Texans post whatever outrages have occurred in their respective states most recently.

Talk about a race to the bottom!

BTW, she posted some things on Monday about another huge legal scandal in MS.

http://folo.wordpress.com/2008/02/04/shelton-a-new-low-for-mississippi/

Whewee!

31. I did check the history. And tornadoes in February are not a recent phenomenon
Once again, people should be wary of falling into the trap of labelling individual events of extreme weather as proof of global climate change. Climate change is real, but its not proven by saying, hey we don't usually have tornadoes in February. Its much more complex.

Anyway, here's what NOAA has to say: "the frequency of tornadoes in the United States is closely tied with the progression of the warm season. Most of the early spring tornadoes in the U.S. tend to occur in the lower latitudes of the Southeast and south Central regions. Gulf States, such as Mississippi and Louisiana are the frequent recipients of tornadoes from February to April."

And here's another link:http://www.tornadochaser.net/february.html

Killer tornadoes have been occurring in places like alabama and georgia during February for a long long time:

FEB 19, 1884 2:30 pm 26 dead 80 injured
Deaths in six communities; 10 at Cross Plains (now called Piedmont) and 14 at Goshen.
FEB 12, 1945 5:22 pm 26 dead 293 injured (AL)
A 20-block area was devastated in what was called Chisholm, north of Montgomery. (A)

FEB 19, 1884 2:00 pm 22 dead 100 injured
Most deaths occurred south of Jasper, Pickens County, near Cagle and Tate; large homes swept away.
(GA)
FEB 10, 1921 12:30 pm 31 dead 100 injured
An entire section of a lumber mill village of Gardner, Washington County literally vanished. (GA)

16. No doubt about that, yesterday (the 4th)
it was 78 degree's...in mid Winter...in SW Missouri, where our normal/average temp is, 40 degree's...we broke a record high temp that day. And just a few days before, we had 6 inches of snow, and a week before that, we had temps below 0 (with wind chills)...one weird winter.

And that was the temp on the thermostat indoors - must be a good 8 or 10 degrees cooler outside...

The sunny side of my house frequently hits 80 degrees, even on cool midwinter days, if the sun is out.

We're expecting up to a foot of "partly cloudy" in Chicago and it's just starting...and this stuff is headed east. If it hooks up with the southern leg of this storm, it could be quite a wild "Weekend in New England".

29. The snow geese are freaking out.
The Canadian geese are confused and squawking their lungs out.

My kids went to school with short-sleeved shirts and no coats.

And I'm sitting here contemplating whether I should hit the beach with the dogs.

All of this is going on here in south Jersey, where we normally would be hunkering down in our houses and bitching about heating costs while we watch the snow fall; but alas, no snow yet.

Maybe April. :)
