Poll question: How much do you pay for health insurance? Range is monthly per person
Edited on Mon Feb-04-08 02:20 PM by uppityperson
I am pulling numbers out of the air here, but a poll will be a bit more anonymous. Since poll choices are limited, if you pay for more than 1 person, please divide the total amount by what you pay, or post in the subject line the range and for how many if you chose to reply. And this is the amount YOU pay, not what an employer kicks in, if that happens.

I am wondering about just Medical, since it seems most don't have dental/vision. If you do and want to write that, please do. Thanks.

Trying to get an idea of how much it costs.

Edited for typo

1. A bit over $800/mo JUST for my husband
who rarely even gets a cold. I am uninsurable for anything less than 3 times what we make.

2. $15 a month through my job...
Edited on Mon Feb-04-08 02:44 PM by TCJ70
...and the $15 is for basic medical plus the extra Dental, Vision, and Hearing. If I didn't have DVH I wouldn't pay anything.

I'm the only one in my household, so it's just for me.

3. I think it's about $75/month for my family but I'm not sure
It might be $125/month now that I think about it. I have a hospital plan and a separate doctoring plan through work.

4. Zero ...
... I live in Canada. We're stuck with that nasty ol' healthcare the RWers keep warning you about, where we get a great system that is funded by our tax dollars.

And no, there are no long lines, or long waits for treatment - nor any of that other crap they keep spewing.

7. Sounds wonderful Nance
We pay $250 approximately a month. Some of that is for dental. And the university pays half, I think. My husband is emeritus, still working half time.

12. If you pay taxes you are paying something for it
You and everyone else who pays taxes in Canada is paying for your health insurance.

Canadian income taxes are generally a little (not a whole lot) higher than US rates.

14. Well, that pretty much follows, doesn't it?
As I said, a great system that is funded by our tax dollars.

Of course I'm paying for it, along with every other taxpayer. But because there is no profit involved, the money actually gets spent on healthcare and not a million-dollar-bonus for an insurance company's CEO.

It's a very well managed, efficient system. I wish my own country would get on-board with it as well. As my husband (also an American) and I have often discussed, it is the expense of healthcare coverage that will absolutely prevent us from ever being able to go back to the States to live. That's pretty damned sad.

5. $250/mo
catastrophic coverage only. No optical, dental, or doctor visits are covered. Among other things. No maternity coverage. Deductible is $4,000 annually with a co pay above that which goes up to $10,000 of total annual out of pocket expenses for covered stuff.

I am just over 40, female. No pre existing conditions. Very little documention of health problems throughout my life. Basically I have health insurance that I can't afford to use and am afraid to lose.....

Oh yeah and I haven't seen a doctor in ten years or had a routine check up in 15 years.

I am less than equal.

8. A little over $200 for me and my son...full HMO benefits (Aetna HMO).
Edited on Mon Feb-04-08 02:47 PM by MercutioATC
Some dental and vision (not a lot, but some). $20 doctor office copays, $5 dentist copays, $25 prescriptions. They pay 100% of everything else (no deductible, no 80/20 split).

I'm covered under FEHBP, so there are no hassles and no exemption for preexisting conditions.

9. Right around $600/month.
With a $2000 family deductible.

Anyone says copay around me, I usually kick them.

11. My payroll deduction is about $150 per month, but that's not the whole picture
Edited on Mon Feb-04-08 03:21 PM by slackmaster
I have no visibility into how much my employer is paying on my behalf (i.e. money they are paying toward our group policy rather than giving it to me in the form of higher salary). Also, copayments are quite variable. I paid over $2,000 in them last year.

13. kick with thanks. I know this poll is limited.
It doesn't include what an employer might pay, or show deductibles/copays which would affect how much we pay, but I wanted to get a quick idea. I appreciate those who are able to write more details. I have no dental or vision, am in WA which has a partially subsidized sliding scale thing and almost making too much to remain on it.

15. Do a poll on what those with pre-existing conditions pay.
Edited on Mon Feb-04-08 03:27 PM by LiberalHeart
When we can get coverage at all (for me, it had to be thru open enrollment -- something the state forced the insurance companies to do till they met a quota for high-risk subscribers), it's hugely more expensive than other pay.

By the way, my pre-existing condition dates back to 1990 and hasn't been a problem since (cured), but I still am paying the out-of-sight price each month.

18. Ok, some input first please.
Would I ask the same, but just add "with pre-existing conditions" or "with chronic conditions" or advise me please and I'll be glad to post one. Seriously, the whole insurance scam and tax scam pisses me off.

Edited on Mon Feb-04-08 04:17 PM by elehhhhna
2 adults, 2 tweeners.

Premium went down a few buck per pp, also. Weird and amazing. Perhaps large insurers are capping premiums so they look decent? lol nice try.

19. If you're trying to figure expectant cost
you need to also inquire about age and smoking status. Most years I get birthday greetings along with a notice of premium increase. Smokers pay about 25% more than non-smokers.

Regards, Mugu

21. This poll was just a general cost poll. Am thinking on doing other ones also.
Someone upthread suggested a poll on pre-existing conditions, am thinking percentage of income going to health insurance might be a good one also, deductible (current), is dental/vision included. Other ideas and thoughts are welcome too. Thanks.
