8. This is to offset the promotion of negative threads
...so there is some validity in the idea. Of course, the different teams would simply vote down their opponents posts, thus the majority would have even more power, so this would be very negative. Perhaps if people were alloted just a couple of "challenges" as day (like the NFL does), they would have to use them wisely :D

11. I can see a case for them, I guess.
Without regulation it's hard to see the introduction of negative recs doing anything other than ratcheting up the current problems.

3. Yes.
Sometimes I'd like to give a -rec to very stupid posts.

I don't think we'll ever see that though.

5. Sure, because rec wars will be so useful to the forum,
like karma-stalking on user-modded sites with slashcode. I understand the impulse, believe me, but in practice, it'd be just another clusterfuck.

That would make the negativity even worse.

12. Wow -- I just started a similar thread on a similar topic (which got locked...)
But it's still here if anyone wants to read it:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x2774474

(Maybe if it had been addressed to everyone like this thread, instead of to Skinner, it wouldn't have gotten locked so quickly?)

post here if posts were judged negatively.

We have both a "hide" feature, and an "ignore" feature -- and, most important, an "alert" feature. I don't know why that doesn't suffice.

The DU Dungeon of Dungeons!

I don't really expect this poll to change anything... maybe if the percentage was 80% or so then it might hold some sway.

22. I hate to admit, I would probably read it every day.
:)

Who knows what this poll will change, but it's fun to consider.

Somebody mentioned Slashdot. They have an interesting system where you can rate individual posts, and classify them as funny, informative, etc. You can also set a filter that collapses all posts with a rating below your threshold, so you can go straight to the best posts and avoid the spam. I don't know if it's right for DU, but it's pretty cool and gives the user a lot of control.

23. the only problem is that allows any cohesive group to silence everyone else
so, say you have 50 supporters of Lil Abner for president. Any thread that is not glowingly positive about Lil Abner can be voted into obscurity.

so, I would say its not a good idea.

29. wouldn't change that it would allow a small group to silence individuals
the group would just have to outnumber positives 5 to 1, but remember a group for Lil Abner can be more committed and dedicated than people who simply agree with an anti-Lil Abner thread.

of course, I don't own this site, I'm just stating my opinion.

30. Real easy to go down that road, but I do feel it's slippery slope and I think the end result is that
Edited on Sun Jan-27-08 06:34 PM by IsItJustMe
you would scare off the more timid posters, and you would be left with the most egotistical opinionated posters.

If you disagree with someones post, say so. But I don't think a back door anonymous way of doing it serves any good purpose, and will make enemies quickly.

On edit: Group think

31. I voted NO for this reason:
If someone does not like you based on older posts, then can rec you down.

There are a still a few here who are mad at me over superbowl ads from a year go that would vote me down no matter what I posted.

Being able to vote people down simply invites anger over past posts and not current/relevant posts.

32. A negative recommendation has to have negative consequences for the voter.
How 'bout this:

If at the end of the week you are in the top third of people making negative recommendations, you lose your star. If you don't have a star you are automatically tombstoned.

If you are the person making the greatest number of negative recommendations in a month, EarlG visits you at home and zaps you with a taser.
