good riddance.

Have you compared Bush/Cheney's violations of human rights and death count with Suharto's? I think you will find proportional equivalency.

name of America and no one is making them accountable. We cannot throw rocks at other criminals when our own house is made of glass. But the American people have always been guilty of this type of provincialism. I think that this time we will pay the piper if we don't correct our mistakes.

Edited on Sun Jan-27-08 01:38 PM by Cleita
that we need to look into our own house for criminals first. We have absolutely no high ground to stand on right now. Also, wasn't he one of our "friends" at one time, kind of like Musharrah is one of our "friends" now? We do have history of propping up brutal dictators who allow us to exploit their country and people for our own interests, which makes us no better than them.

None of us here want any dictator in charge of anything. Yes, we do have a horrible history and should work for a change into a more progressive way of living. We should, yes and us here on DU do. Don't you agree?

35. Evidently many of us did vote for the Congressional majority
that was supposed to investigate him and were suddenly informed that impeachment was off the table and it seems investigations as well. So I would say we are all guilty for not forcing change in the system that puts corporate tools of both parties in office.

27. The lasting legacy of Suharto
The bloodshed which accompanied his rise to power, after a mysterious coup attempt in 1965 which he blamed on Indonesia's then-powerful Communist Party, was on a scale matched only in Cambodia in this region.

Within the space of a few months at least half a million people were slaughtered in anti-communist pogroms that, at the very least, Suharto and the military tacitly encouraged.
>
The spectre of a communist revival was used time and again, right up to the end of his rule, to discredit dissidents, even though the party was completely destroyed in the 1960s.

In the wake of those killings, 200,000 people were detained, half of who remained in prison for more than a decade, most without trial.
