Let's really stimulate the economy fast.
The Bush administration should just eliminate the 18.4 cents per gal. of gas in taxes that goes to the federal government. No check printing and delivery, no IRS, no taxation on the rebate income in 2009. It effects everyone, even if they don't have a car they buy goods delivered by truck. Simple and fast.

1. Actually the best way to stimulate the economy - bring gas back down below $2.00 / gal.
There is no fucking way gas should be that high, especially in cities like Los Angeles that don't have a decent mass transportation system. :grr:

4. actually, there's no reason gas should be as CHEAP as it is now.
considering it's overall value to our society, and the problems we'll have when it's all gone.

7. Yeah, but right now gas is expensive and it all goes to the pocketbook of some oil company CEO
If we had gas the same way Europe does where it all goes back to the infrastructure instead of lining some rich asshole's pocketbook, THEN I might be inclined to agree with you.

11. but it's not "expensive" at all.
when you consider how valuable/vital it is to our way of life, and consider how much might actually be left of the ONE-TIME supply of petroleum, we're pissing away the current lifeblood of our civilization.
if prices were more inline with it's actual value, people would use less, making it last longer.

9. You actually want to pay more for gas?
I don't get it when people justify the jump in prices of gas and health care by saying it actually should be higher.

The oil companies all have record profits that is effected by the price of gas. The price of gas has a very large effect on many peoples personal finances. Mine included.

The more it cost to travel, the less I do it. The less I travel, the less money goes from my pocket to the restaurants and other establishments that I used to frequent.

All my disposable income has been put into my gas tank.

10. yes. i think it's ridiculous that people bemoan the "high price of gas"...
when, as a commodity it should be priced much higher. most of the opec nations have probably greatly exaggerated their reserves, which likely puts us pretty much past peak oil already. oil is extremely vital and valuable to our entire way of life at this point- and when it's gone, it's GONE.
if it were priced more realistically, people would use less, and it would likely last much longer.

if it were priced appropriately, overall usage by society as a whole would drop considerably, and alternatives would be explored and utilized more quickly.

Our lives are spread out. We all live 5 miles or more from work and the corner stores are all gone.
Do you think that I am the only one that has to drive to and from work and to and from shopping?

The only way we could drive less is live like the fucking Chinese on bicycles peddling through the snow with enough groceries to fix the days meal.

About me, it's about the way America was developed. We do not live in villages, we live in Cities and rural areas where we have to drive to everything we do.

so, it seems that just because the u.s. is designed around the car, you feel that gasoline is always going to be there?

global warming is ANOTHER reason why gas prices should be MUCH higher than they currently are. we need to cut down on gasoline usage for both reasons- peak oil and the depleted supply, and the impact that auto emissions have on global warming.

or are you one of those people who feel that the american economy is too important, and yet too frail to survive without completely destroying the planet?

taking every dime one has to "reduce fuel consumption" To think that is viable is more moronic than believing ethanol is the answer.

I don't know who you expect everyone to ride with when their jobs are different directions from each other. It's not like everyone lives in one neighborhood and works at the same location. Not all jobs start at the same hour and end at the same hour.

Every time the price of gas goes up, I cut something else from my expenses and that does nothing for the economy. I know many people that do the same thing. First it was eating out and movies. The only thing that I could cut at this point is my kids extra curricular activities, Oh I guess they shouldn't have music lessons or dance lessons because we should be paying $8.00/Gallon for gasoline because it will cut down on consumption.

Only in America would someone believe such a bullshit story.

Posting on a political forum, would I.

I am informed enough to realize that jacking the price through the roof isn't going to stop anything.
Raising the price of fuel does nothing more than raise the price of everything else thus stunting the economy even more which is where this thread started I believe.

24. When I visited America, I was shocked by how much people drove and how little they walked.
Americans do often use cars for journeys where most people in Britain would walk (and still more so compared to many other countries).

Becoming less car-dependent is perfectly viable for American society, and well worth while.

And most Americans live that far or more from their place of employment.
And most neighborhoods don't have grocery stores or other shopping. Example, nearest grocery store to my house is 2 miles. Not going to carry a weeks worth of food home by foot that far.

and it would make a GREAT run. when my wife was commuting to her job by train, the station was about 4 1/2 miles away, so she would take the bus to the train in the morning, but she would run home in the evening.

LOTS of people walk to grocery stores that are more than 2 miles away- they have this great invention called a "wheel"- they attach them to carts and/or wagons, and it allows them to actually WALK, while pulling their items behind them.

5 miles is TOO FAR not to drive to work, and 2 miles is too far not to drive to the store...

Like liberal N proud sez - people still have to go to work, get the kids to school, go to the market, etc etc. As it is the only viable option most people have - because of a conscience effort for almost 60 yrs by the federal govt to promote it over other means of transportation - is their car.

If gas was priced at $7-8/gal it would have to part of a comprehensive energy & transportation policy which includes MUCH higher mileage requirements and greatly expanded local, regional & national public mass transportation networks.

One more reason to vote exclusively Democratic.

This is a free market. Demand for gasoline is down (in the US) and supply is steady, so prices are dipping a bit.

If you think it needs to be priced higher, then by all means leave a 100% tip to the gas station every time you fill up.

3. $3.29/gal - $.18/gal @ 12 gal/fill-up = $2.16 savings each fill-up
On average I fill my tank once per week
52 fill-up/yr @ $2.16 each amounts to $112 bucks give or take.

Not going to do much either.

If they brought gas prices back down to near the level they were with numbnutz took office that would stimulate the economy real fast.

That is what the gas tax goes for, repair of Federal highways and associated infrastructure.

It's being robbed by this administration, just like they're robbing everything else, but we're going to need that tax when we get rid of this bunch and probably an extra tax just to play catch up on deferred maintenance.

Well, unless you relish the idea of having a bridge collapse under your car.

It also costs everyone more for everything we by that is delivered by truck, rail, airplane. Everyone gets the benefit of lower gas prices. Hell I'm for capping the profit on oil and removing ALL oil company tax breaks but that will never happen. They don't even have meters on the Iraqi oil pumps. They "estimate" how much oil is pumped into huge freighters by how much they sink into the water when they're full!

42. That would save $100 B per year!
If even a fraction of that was invested in things from welfare to unemployment benefits to Social Security increases or health care or schools, that would be a huge shot in the arm for the U.S economy.

45. I don't know about that, I think it would.
Impeachment ain't cheap' actually costs millions just to investigate. A death penalty trial ain't cheap either. Hell their lawyers would make millions in filling motions alone. Maybe a coup is the only economical way.
