Teen Accused Of Plot To Hijack Airliner, Crash Into 'Hannah Montana' Concert
Teen Accused Of Plot To Hijack Airliner, Crash Into 'Hannah Montana' Concert

A 16-year-old is accused of plotting to hijack a Southwest Airlines flight to crash it into a Lafayette, La., building where a "Hannah Montana" concert was to be performed.

A Southwest Airlines representative told The Associated Press that the teen was detained after Flight 284 from Los Angeles landed in Nashville this week.

The teen was caught with handcuffs, rope and duct tape on the plane, Local 6 reported Friday.

Agents also found an apparent mock airplane cockpit in his bedroom, the report said.

10. Are handcuffs not permitted on planes?
Or duct tape? I don't recall either of those items listed as contraband.

More than 3 ounces of shaving cream makes you a terrorist, but handcuffs are OK? Am I supposed to understand this stuff?

I hope the kid gets some mental health help. 1 article I found said the concert was for 3 days after he flew. http://www.transworldnews.com/NewsStory.aspx?id=34322&cat=2
It was later revealed that Cyrus’ concert at the stadium was set for January 25, three days after the boy planned to attack.

You don't fuck with Southwest passengers, that is for sure. Now if he were flying United, AA, or Delta, he probably could have got away with it.

17. Handcuffs, rope, and duct tape are not TSA-prohibited items.
And the (incredibly brief) story does mention that he didn't actually try to carry out the plot. So what exactly was the kid arrested for? Thought crime plus carrying fetish gear? This is an odd story.

but certain lighters I think are OK again. Duct tape, rope, and handcuffs have never been a problem. Hence my confusion as to why this teenager was arrested.

44. according to TSA's most recently posted list I can.
I don't see how handcuffs, rope, and duct tape can combine in any way to create an effective offensive weapon, such as might be used by an individual seeking to take control of an aircraft. Tie the cuffs to the end of the rope, and swing it? Duct tape someone to death? I might as well claim that the guy in 23A with the laptop intended to bludgeon me to death with it. For the TSA list, which gets down to the level of precisely how much breast milk for baby is kosher, to omit these items must mean that even the fanatical unreasonables who composed the TSA list recognize that a hijacking plot featuring rope and duct tape is more likely high school guidance counselor stuff than federal government stuff.

So, if the items in the kid's possession weren't prohibited, and he had not made any move during the flight indicating that he might want to hijack it with his duct tape and rope and handcuffs, why was he arrested? What law did he break for which he was arrested?

20. Now all those REAL terrorists know they can take this stuff on planes, watch for TSA updates...
New from TSA, handcuffs must be under 1/4 inch in diameter to be allowed in carry ons, and must be placed in a quart sized ziptop baggie for inspection. Only Red duct tape will be allowed, grey, white and other colors will be discarded in the appropriate bin.

43. I'm sorry, guys, but my bullshit detector is wailing as we speak
Where shall we start? Oh, I know!

Handcuffs, rope and duct tape. They're not prohibited items according to the TSA list, but it's gonna be slightly hard to convince me TSA wouldn't have motioned him to the side for questioning with all that shit in his bag. He's sixteen. He's not OLD enough to know about that kind of sex!

All that shit, but no weapons? So the kid stands up, yells out "I'm hijacking this plane to Lafayette, Louisiana!" All the people who don't want to go to Lafayette for any reason at all, even the apparently noble cause of taking out Hannah Montana, would grab this moran, handcuff him, tie him up with rope, tape him up, beat the living shit out of him and throw him through the window. It's not like one asshat without so much as a utility knife could have withstood an onslaught by 80 or 90 people who didn't want to go to Louisiana. So much for that idea.

Mock airplane cockpit. A lot of people have those...it's called a PC with a flight sim and a CH Products yoke on it. It makes you wonder why his mom didn't pour Clean & Clear on it, wait till it blew up then taped pictures of a mint plant and the dashboard out of a Piper Warrior to his bedroom door so he'd know the difference next time.

And if he really wanted to hijack an airplane, fly it to Lafayette and take out the Hannah Montana concert, wouldn't he have at least read the Hannah Montana website to find out what day she was going to be there?

I'm not overly concerned with the reality of the situation, the idea alone is hysterically brilliant and that's enough for me.

Oh and give yourself a mint plant point for the excellent reference. Pretty funny in and of itself.
