A $300 "rebate"? I'm laughing so hard, I'm crying.
This rebate is a fucking joke, as far as I can tell. Yes, I'm sure it will help people in the extreme short-term, but I bet that a lot of people will pay bills with the money, not go out and buy goods and services to "stimulate the economy".

All this does is stick a finger in one hole among many holes in the dike. It's not a long-terms solution; nothing fundamental is changing. It's like going on a one-night bender; the only thing we'll have left is a freaking hangover. The problems that were there before the bender will be there when we sober up.

This country is so damned fucked up right now, I can hardly stand it.

1. It is a joke.
That's like only 2 weeks worth of groceries or 6 tanks worth of gas.

$300/4= $75

$75 per tank at $3 a gallon= 25 gallons

3. Plus, it should probably be called a "loan" as we'll have to claim it
as income next year and pay taxes on it.

Meanwhile, somewhere, the most powerful and wealthy are raking in millions in tax cuts to send our jobs overseas, close factories here in the states, and import cheap crap that is harmful to us.

Makes you want to pull your hair out. It would be saner, and less painful in the long run.

8. Yep. I'm not absolutely sure about the details, but it might
be pretty much the same thing as what happened last time we got a "rebate." It wasn't a rebate at all; it was a loan on future tax returns.

163. Right, you could classify it as a loan.
It's an advance on your next tax return. Since, I never receive a return, I will be sending the check back. I always have to pay at the end of the year, so I don't want to pay that money back plus my taxes.

10. Nancy takes this very seriously. She put her reputation on the line with the Repugs
to make sure that the children would get that money. She talked about how wonderful it is that the children will get that money on C-Span with Paulson. 300 a person...and for each child. But, if you make less than $3,000 you get Zip.

It makes no sense... Handing out money to the People...while they cover up the rest of the programs like more tax give aways for big business and allowing Fanny Mae to give mortgages for homes up to $700.000.

Nancy always chokes up about her children. She wants to do right by them..

If she cared about children she would care about their parents having jobs, housing, health care, and rights. She'd impeach the murderous/robbing/courrpt/lying leadeship in the White House who are ruining their future. That's an agenda any leader who has courage and morals would care about. Right Nancy?

And beyond even that, I can't fathom why she goes along with this crap.

When she first became Speaker, I felt so proud. I watched the State of the Union Address, which I normally avoid like the plague, to hear "Madam Speaker......".

I am disappointed in her, and so angry at her. I don't think she cares about us any more than Bush does, which is to say, not at all.

65. It's Nothing! And Blatently so....It's insulting ...when Wall St. and repeal of Glass-Steagall
caused another bubble where billions of dollars were lost by Rich Folks she and the Repugs throw $300 at us and we are supposed to feel Grateful? How does that help anyone with a mortgage payment who was swindled by those predatory lenders or..those with Credit Cards to the Max trying to live off their cards with inflation running rampant? That $300 barely would cover an office visit to a specialist if you don't have insurance that gives you a "Co-Pay" because they don't discount for folks without insurance.

It's just so dreadful. It's like a Queen riding through a town in her gilded coach with six horses and footmen in the Middle Ages throwing bread crumbs to the masses as she passes by...and being charmed as the scraggly children rush up and crab the crumbs with their poor dirty little fingers and give a wave to her as she passes by.

they spend? I'm no math whiz, but even I understand that.

They argue that goods and services would cost more, if people were paid more. Well, I'd rather pay more for something if it were made in the US, if it were safe, and if it meant that more people had decent paying jobs.

Outsourcing jobs and paying people in the US a crappy wage is like trying to hang onto mercury in your hand. The harder you squeeze, the more of it leaks out.

It is absurd; you are right.

The wisest strategic use of the rebate would be to pay off one's existing debt, or some of it. But most Americans now owe somewhere between eight and twenty grand just on credit cards alone--not to mention outstanding debt on autos and houses.

I spent $175 at the grocery store this morning, and that was mostly because I bought organic products. The dollar is buying less and less; we probably face deflation.

50. No more of a joke than what the Government thinks a person can survive on.
Which is why they think the $300 will make all the difference in the world to someone, and pull them out of a slump. At least what they claim in public.

Pulling Corporate America out of a slump is more like it.

Not to fear though, further funding will have to be cut going to State and Local Governments. So the people will have to end up paying back two or three times the amount given to them, with increased State and Local taxes or services cut. Everything is a racket, and we are Subjects to our Corporate Government.

53. They really do live in a different world, don't they?
I'm not saying that $300-$1200 wouldn't be a big deal to some people; no doubt it would. But overall, that amount of money is nothing! Not compared to the cost of things these days, from gas to food to medical bills, and so many other things.

And you're right; pulling Corporate America out of a slump is really what it's about. The pittance they are throwing at individuals is just to (they hope) shut us up.

We'll get our checks, the money will be gone within days for most of us, and the economic crash will still be here.

A more effective approach would be to raise and extend unemployment benefits & welfare benefits, which targets the people Bush does not want to benefit - poor and working-class Americans, so people stuck without a job during the recession have the means to weather it without losing everything.

In other words, if I am due a refund on my taxes that I file for 2008, this $600 check (I'm single) will be deducted from the amount of a future tax refund I am due to receive? This is what is being suggested here and it is the first I've heard of it.

My employer tried to get out of paying mine by putting me on "suspension". I got a lawyer to get it.

The numbers of "discouraged workers" aren't counted either.

When you look at the numbers of people out in the streets in the 3rd world you have to know they are there because they don't have jobs during the day...or any time.

Robbery is going on and the people know it. Too bad the govenment looks the other way. We might say they are part of the problem not the solution.

is only there to transfer money and power from the poor to the rich.

That is why we need to elect a true populist progressive congress and take control of our government.
With all the real problems facing this country like
The crumbling infrastructure
rampant unemployment and
the lack of health care

you would think there would be some real discussion of what needs to be done.

But no we have candidates talking about Mandating health insurance and building walls.

177. I heard Clinton talk about Hillary's health plan on CSPAN
We would all pay for insurance (is that a different thing?). The poor who couldn't would be helped some way (I wondered how).

It wasn't very clear to me.

Do they pick these audiences when they speak? I know the Republican debtes are fixed but what about our Democratic ones?

ONE PAYER NATIONAL HEALTH CARE IS WHAT WE DEMANDED IN THE 2006 ELECTION DEMS!!

I thought it was supposed to "stimulate" the economy.

122. It's beyond a joke, it's another disaster
Like you said, people won't be going out and stimulating the economy buying crap that they don't need. No, instead they'll be paying off debt, credit card bills, mortgages, etc.

Worse thing is that all this is going to be done with borrowed money, thus the nation's debt goes up some more, the value of the dollar shrinks, inflation rises, and it means that the economic headwinds we're currently sailing into are going to start ratcheting up to gale force.

124. Absolutely, MadHound.
I know a lot of people here get it, but I'm afraid that a majority of people won't.

It's gonna get really, really ugly before all is said and done.

Put it in the bank, and they'll come up with some kind of fee to charge you.

go to the bank and get rolls of quarters with your rebate check. You might end up with some silver which will be worth more when the shisit really hits the fan. Then of course mail me the gps co ordinates of where you buried the can in case something happens meanwhile. ;-)

to pacify us and they get to keep their sorry ass jobs-not DO them-you know like end the war-a few billion there in funds-or impeach the idiots bankrupting us.

"Here's your cash dear-now shut the fuck up."I despise them.

Toss a few crumbs at the great unwashed, and they'll leave us alone.

Some of us aren't as stupid as you think we are.

174. I like to think of it as
1 more six-pack of beer a week.

I'd much rather have that then extended unemployment benefits, quality schools, decent roads and bridges, or a plan to rebuild one of our great cities.

I think I'm drinking more since Bush became pretzledent anyway.
