Hey guess what there was a time when the parties were less partisan. The Democratic party did have a conservative wing and the Republican party did have a liberal wing. Reagan Democrats did exist, just as Goldwater appeals to many "liberal" voters today.

It was not that difficult for many to jump from the economic mess of the Carter administration to Reagan. I know everyone here wants to think everyone made the leap based solely on racism, but it's just not the case.

And if we're smart, we will realize that there are social liberals in the republican party - or moderates in the republican party - who are ready to make the leap back to this side. Bush-Cheney, Inc. has destroyed the republican party. If we can't take advantage of that and attract new voters, there's no hope for this country.

I've got Reagan Democrats in my family. A few fell for Nixon's schtick in 72, tho none fell for it in '68. But they all fell for Reagan's hoakum in 1980. They had it good enough after 40 years of Democratic Congresses that they didn't feel they needed to vote for the Democrats. They got bamboozled by the cultural wedge issues and the "get government off my back" rhetoric. And God bless 'em, a few of them died before they saw that the get government off my back crowd were the biggest budget busters since Louis 14th.
