How are you keeping your carbon footprint down this winter?
With the cold snap coming in it pains me everytime our furnace kicks in. It's set really low but when it kicks in, I can't help to think about all the fossil fuels that are burning ruining the atmosphere. It is 16 degrees outside, it makes me wish there was a way to generate heat without ruining the environment.

1. We string a clothes line across the large family room so that while we do use the furnace,
At least we are not using the furnace and the clothes dryer.

Twice a week we hike the twenty minutes to the store and back rather than drive.

These are little things but we hope that they add up.

3. 2 good ideas. we have a laundry room large enough for a clothes line
so that is where clothes are hung (all year round--and the backyard in nice weather)

wish a grocery store was near enough to walk to.

17. At Least Then It's Downhill with the Groceries for You
We used to have a store half a mile away. It closed down. Now it's 7 miles to the store (and a 2000' elevation gain coming back with the groceries).

Been doing line drying most of the time, but we're only getting away with it this far into winter because we had a dry spell, which seems to be ending.

5. Adds humidity to your home if you don't have a humidifier
in the cold weather. You use less heat since humidity adds warmth and it makes breathing easier. You'll have less sore throats too.

Walking is good for you so going that short distance is a "good thing". Watch out if you aren't walking on a sidewalk for cars.

14. We don't have a dryer
And we use the furnace to do double duty too.

We basically try to be conservative in using the heaters and, in the summer, in using the air conditioner.

10. forgot to mention did not buy a new car
decided to keep my 9 year old drive instead (don't worry, the emissions test results were wonderful which led to the decision to keep it)

7. Closed off unused rooms, put on another layer instead of turning up
the heat. I have a long cotton shirt, heavy sweatshirt, and polartec jacket on right now. I have a skullcap, socks and gloves with the fingers cut out.

I'm slow cooking some beans. It is warming the house and adding moisture to the air.

13. Burning all wood in the stove.......
It's all I got, and it keeps me warm.

Carbon? LOL

It's been -20 most nights lately here.

I guess I could just freeze to death, but that day is not here
yet.

My dog is only four years old, so I have to keep alive at least
till he's gone.

I am an Atheist.

I believe in AGW, however logic tells me, "It's just a planet".

I will do my best, but freezing to death this winter?

Uhmmmmm, NO!

16. I grew more trees than I cut down, we heat primarily with wood.
In this part of the country timbered property produces about 2 cords of wood per acre. We have just under 100 acres. We burn about 9 cords per winter. I don't cut wood for any other purpose. Do the math.
