How droll. Laura Bush visits 300 square foot "Katrina Cottages"
Edited on Thu Feb-22-07 09:08 PM by Bluebear
A year and a half later, people are still living in "cottages".

OCEAN SPRINGS, Miss. First lady Laura Bush toured "Katrina Cottages" today (Thursday) as part of a one-day visit to the hurricane-ravaged Mississippi Gulf Coast. The relatively inexpensive homes are designed to give thousands of Gulf Coast families still living in government-issued trailers in Mississippi and Louisiana a more homelike atmosphere.

Ocean Springs Mayor Connie Moran who toured the demonstration cottages with Bush and architect Bruce Tolar says he has tremendous respect for Mrs. Bush, her dedication to education and reading.

Bush spent about 30 minutes touring two completed units, one 300 square feet and the other 500 square feet.

3. How much jet fuel? How much taxpayer money?
Was spent on this? It had to have taken her longer to fly there than she actually spent on the ground. And for what?

This photo op was disgusting. Not only are people still living in cottages a year and a half later, they are living in cottages that have just been built.

Poor Mayor "Moran." (No disparagement intended). Must have been hell to tour with that nasty woman Laura.

7. Miniature versions of this, should be an option in the future,
they should be affordable and easily redone on the inside. The technology exists, why we are mired in the building practices of the past is way beyond me.

Our Mission

Our mission is to help reduce the suffering associated with the destruction and loss of one's home in a natural disaster. We want to help promote awareness of the superior building technologies that can alleviate unnecessary losses. Many of the new technologies are more energy efficient and environmentally friendly than their predecessors allowing the construction of structures while protecting and preserving the delicate balance of nature.

13. She got lost for 30 minutes in a 300 sq ft cottage?
She had to have been lost; she doesn't care enough to stay for 30 minutes.

I've never lived in an apartment that small. Are the trailer folk trading in more square footage for more expensive smaller cottages? I'm not so sure about the economics of this project. Somebody needs to convince me.

23. My den is larger than 300 square feet
And I live in a pretty normal sized house (not exactly a McMansion). I can't really imagine the whole family living in that room , particularly since we'd need bathing, cooking and sleeping space.

Maybe Jen and Barbara should ive in one wile they do Katrina relief- (what exactly are those girls doing these days anyway?)

Notice it was NOT: I respect Mrs. Bush and her husband for their serious committment to our recovery here.

the ravaged area. Glad to hear she saw the cottages that are probably smaller than her closet at the White House or the ranch.

30. We built a 22 'x 22' studio apartment above a 2 car garage. It's meant to house 1 person
Since we're walking distance to UNC-Chapel Hill, we thought we'd rent it to a graduate student after both our sons had left home. Right now, it houses the drums for our youngest.
