Oh good, Obama IS on the side of LGBT's, he says Omar is his favorite character

:eyes: And notice the Senator explains, "he's the toughest, baddest guy on this show, but he's gay, you know."

======

...it should come as no surprise that our first post out of the gate is about both gays and politics.

Sen. Barack Obama was recently asked about his favorite TV show, The Wire. Here’s the interesting exchange, thanks to Slog.

Obama: I gotta say Omar’s a great character. That’s not an endorsement.Coolican: (Laughing.) Uh oh, you’re making national news here.

Obama: Exactly. That is not an endorsement. He is not my favorite person. But he’s a fascinating character.

Coolican: And there’s a real life story behind it, too.

Obama: He’s this gay gangster who only robs drug dealers, and then gives back. You know, he’s sort of a Robin Hood. And he’s the toughest, baddest guy on this show, but he’s gay, you know. And it’s really interesting. It’s a fascinating character.

68. 'Smartly, Brady won't identify what political party he has aligned with'
Smartly, Brady won't identify what political party he has aligned with. So that got the media to send their top investigative reporters after him.

Brady's political persuasion is apparently so worrisome that one media outlet even went to all the trouble of checking his voting and registration records at the three residences Brady has lived in over the past decade.

The Smoking Gun Web site, owned by CourtTV, revealed the results of its own investigation.

In 2000, when Brady first registered to vote, he did so as "undecided" – joining no political party.

44. I'll take his campaign's word for it
when the story first broke:

Harrison Hickman, Edwards’ pollster, whom the Washington Post says was in the room at the time he made the remarks, claims that Shrum, “is sensationalizing and taking out of context what was an honest discussion about <Edwards’> lack of exposure to these issues and openly gay people. I don’t remember anything that expressed any kind of venom or judgment about gay people.”

Eric Schultz, an Edwards spokesperson, says Shrum is more interested in selling books than in the truth.

But Edwards’ people don’t deny the accuracy of the quote; it was conveniently “taken out of context,” they say.

And it doesn't sound like he's been around gays a lot. Maybe he's wet behind the ears. I am a little tired of the Greek chorus of racism, sexism and gayism complaints. I just want to know if his health plan is as naive as Krugman made it out to be in the Times.

I hope Omar survives, by the way, but it looks like he's a goner.

63. With all due respect...
I think disdain would be better placed on shows which further the stereotype of gay men as overly-effeminate, limp-wristed drama queens. I think surprise at a gay gangster character can only be blamed on the fact that most shows that push the effeminate stereotype are given a free pass as long as it makes people laugh - Will and Grace comes to mind. I think Obama pointing out a character that is interesting because it doesn't conform to a stereotype isn't a slam about what he thinks gays should act like as much as it is a condemnation of their typical role in entertainment.

I don't think there would have been any uproar if he were talking about a black character who plays a gangster who is also a Harvard graduate, even though it's obvious that such a character would be atypical. And its obvious the character he was referring to is designed to be a departure from stereotypical roles. Why else would there be any need to divulge his sexual orientation. He's gay for a reason, and Obama wasn't responsible for the back story.
