Toilet-to-Tap Process is Still Awaiting State Approval

LOS ANGELES (KNX 1070 NEWSRADIO) -- The first step towards Orange County residents drinking toilet water has been taken. A $480 million system that cleans sewer water is now sending treated water to an underground barrier that keeps seawater out of the county's aquifer for drinking water.

The Groundwater Replenishment System's next step is to pump 35 million gallons each day into settling ponds in Anaheim, which would mean the treated water would enter the aquifer and mix with drinking water.

State health officials have yet to approve this action.

Through the Orange County Water District and the Orange County Sanitation District, pretreated sewer water is sent through high-powered filters that pull out microscopic contaminants. Then the water is subjected to very intense ultraviolet light to kill off any additional organisms and organic material, making it safe for human consumption.

quite shocked that they were shocked/'sickened' by the proposal.

I was the co-chair of an environment committee that fought for environmental improvements to our metropolitan sewerage district treatment plants in the 70's. Guess what? People have been drinking purified water that has been reclaimed/treated for many decades. I'm astonished that so many seem to not know this.

Sure, this might be a little different process, but the underlying elements are the same - or, am I missing something?
