13. As an individual ethical failing, yes. In terms of the harm caused? No.
The harm caused by racism is (cumulatively) GENERATIONAL ... it's inherited. Those benefited by racism pass on their advantage to their children and so on. Those harmed pass on their DISadvantage to their children and so on. Succeeding generations inherit both their race and the advantage/disadvantage that our socioeconomic system guarantees. It's monstrously unfair, imho.

The harm caused by sexism affects all, male and female, across all 'classes' ... but we don't inherit the disadvantage or advantage. We all have parents of both genders. (Even though I was raised by a single mother ... and so I 'might' claim 'special' harm.) We apparently all have the same 'opportunity' to have gay children ... or even parents.

This is NOT an apologetic for a "lesser evil" ... no way. The corruption of the "SOUL" of any such bigotry is a ROT ... sewage.

17. I was raised by a single mother. No one at my high school cared
very much if I graduated. I know that because I had to go try to dig up my records to apply to Cal. They weren't anywhere. The good people at my school district didn't expect me to apply to college because I came from one of "those" families. I kid you not.

Homophobia and sexism do make their ugly way across generations, too.

20. I had similar experiences.
But the ADVANTAGE of being WHITE and MALE and STRAIGHT clearly dwarfed the 'inheritance' of being raised by a single (divorced - father not in picture) mother. And I DON'T inheirit her gender. We DO inherit our race.

22. Clearly you got better treatment because of your . . . attributes.
lol

I swear, I could have fallen into a ditch and died and my high school counselor wouldn't have noticed. And, it would have mostly been because my little mom wouldn't have been able to beat him up.

This needn't be some kind of competition. Melanin marks us in this culture. But, so do single moms and gay parents -- for now. I may be a nutcase optimist but the LGBT movement fills me with hope I haven't felt lo, these many years.

Maybe we'll get to see it. :)

35. the harm of sexism is most definitely passed on to the next generation, and harm is more than econom
economic. parents who believe that wives should be subject to their husbands (try to) raise their daughters to believe the same thing. (by the way, i consider that to be harm). a mother's loss of dignity and sense of possibilities for her own life are passed on to her daughters. a father's belief in his 'rightful' authority over his wife is passed on to his sons. this should hardly need to be pointed out.

61. on the other hand, homophobia is literally killing gay black men.
so i dont see how its lesser of an evil.

the disenfranchisement from society at large (from racism) and from their own society (homophobia) is causing black men to behave in more self destructive ways (unprotected sex) and the hiv rates is staggering.

"My great grandparents were all homosexuals not allowed to vote or own property."
or
"My great grandparents were all women brought to this country in chains."

Hell ... who'd even know?
One thing's for sure ... we know the race of our ancestors a LOT more than anything else.

46. It should be
but it clearly isn't thought to be at this time. It is virtually impossible for a homophobe to have his or her career derailed while a racist almost certainly will. Sexism's punishment falls inbetween somewhere. One whole political party campaigns on offical, sanctioned homophobia while it wouldn't dare, no matter how much it might want to, campaign on officially sanctioned racism or sexism. Like it or not, the majority of the country, and I dare say even many gays, feel homophobia is more acceptable than either racism or sexism.

The traits usually go hand in hand.

It's just that homophobia is safe to express in America (legally, anyways). So what you're seeing is all the bigots who would normally be attacking minorities and women.

Behind closed doors they're the same.

83. There is no hierarchy to human rights. A country can fight for all these
groups at the same time.

91. Well said.
They are all symptomatic of the same horrible rot, and must ALL be rooted out in order for us to prosper. A human right is a human right, and each of us depends on the free exercise of those rights by every other person.

society to live well and prosper. No two ways about it.

84. bad and good are relative terms. I prefer to think of it like this
homophobia, racism, sexism, bigotry, hate speech, they all stem from one emotion - malice and one mental state - willful ignorance.

Now in my world view, these are 'bad' things. They don't want to get along with the rest of the world. People with malice want to hurt and be cruel. They are the tortures and the executioners of the world. To them, the normal state is to destruct and be negative.

As I've been saying, along with sexism, it seems to be an "acceptable" bigotry still. It's pretty deeply ingrained I think, in older generations.

Thankfully, I do think that's changing pretty dramatically with our younger people now.

There are laws against racist and sexist discrimination. You don't have to hide being a black or a woman to keep your job or have your SO inherit or be in the hospital room with you.

As a black or a women you don't have people afraid that you are contagious or something and that your gayness will somehow rub off on them.
