Presidential hopeful Barack Obama has won the endorsement of two fellow Democratic senators from the heartland Ben Nelson, a popular moderate in largely Republican Nebraska and Claire McCaskill from Missouri, historically a bellwether in presidential contests.

Nelson said Saturday he believes Obama has ability to bridge the partisan divide and to carry Democratic candidates across the country to victory in 2008. Nelson, pledging his support for his Illinois colleague, said Obama has "the greatest potential to ending the bitterness and poisonous atmosphere in Washington."

McCaskill plans to announce her support for the Illinois senator Sunday, according to an Obama aide and a McCaskill staffer who spoke Saturday on condition of anonymity so as not to upstage the announcement.

Her endorsement is expected to be a major boost for Obama in Missouri, one of nearly two dozen states holding primaries or caucuses on Feb. 5, and could help Obama woo female voters in his race against New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, his chief rival for the Democratic nomination.<snip>

We all know that Ben Nelson will be the new favorite of DU.
Amazing how Duers are so willing to bend over backward for Obama.

12. Ben Nelson is far to the right of Clinton.
You know that. Example: Clinton is pro-choice, Nelson is not.
Clinton opposed Bush's tax cuts for the rich, Nelson supported them.

Confirming Alito: Nelson: Yes, Clinton: NO

2. I often don't agree with Nelson.
But I respect him because he stands for what he believes in and has the strong support of his constiuents in a highly red state. Without Nelson we wouldn't have a Democratic majority in the Senate. I think it's telling of the true nature of Senatorial relations that he has endorsed Obama.

4. Do we really need
the wisdom and strength of conviction of Senate Dems in the WH?

Four more years of Dem waffling and capitulation to the GOP agenda, only now with the WH chiming in? No thanks.

7. You're making an assumption.
But I'm not even going to get into why your post denies some fundamental realities about how the Congress and the U.S. Goverment as a whole functions. Thank you for playing.

8. And its an accurate one
perhaps you can enlighten me as to any indication that Obama or Clinton would govern any differently in the WH than they now do in the Senate. No one is blaming them for the entire Senate's inaction, but you need to give solid examples of them taking active, aggressive action to advance any kind of change in the Senate.

10. No , actually considering his extreme voting record
I'm surprised Nelson even endorsed a Dem.

Hey, without him in office, the Dems wouldn't have a majority. Nelson's record has been atrocious and almost completely in agreement with Bush and other Senate Republicans...

As long as Obama is not taking policy advice from him, I don't care. Nelson has obviously figured out some way of winning in NE as a Dem., no easy task.

16. I guess you would like it if Nelson jumped to the GOP and endorsed
a Repubican for president and put the Senate back in GOP hands?

17. Yes. I agree. That's why I don't support Obama...he's too "come togethr and sing Kumbaya" for me.
He's of the Ben Nelson, John Salazar, Mary Landrieu wing of the Democratic Party. That's NOT for me.

14. So would you all rather Nelson backed a Republican or jump parties like Lieberman did?
Edited on Sun Jan-13-08 02:41 AM by book_worm
So Nelson backs Obama--good! Obama also has left leaning Democrats like Kerry and Ned Lamont, who took on Lieberman in CT, supporting him. Naturally if anybody who is to the right of DU backs one of the candidates some people here will say, 'Oh, look! that shows the kind of president he (or she) will be.'
