Here is an Emerson quote that pretty much sums up Conservatism
From a Man who stood up for the rights of Blacks and Woman long before those of faith did.

"Conservatism makes no poetry, breathes no prayer, has no invention; it is all memory. Reform has no gratitude, no prudence, no husbandry." Emerson

Basically, conservatism could translate to this:

9/11, 9/11, 9/11, Ronald Reagan Ronald Reagan, Ronald Reagan

2. Is this a game to pick the new GOP Slogan?
My pick is:

Parts of the Bible,
Parts of the Constitution
Forget everything else.

or

History is for those who can't buy P.R.

3. K&R!!!
Maybe you'll like these as well:

Alfred E. Wiggam: A conservative is a man who believes that nothing should be done for the first time.

Elbert Hubbard: A conservative is a man who is too cowardly to fight and too fat to run.

Franklin Delano Roosevelt: A conservative is a man with two perfectly good legs who, however, has never learned how to walk forward.

John Kenneth Galbraith: The modern conservative is engaged in one of man's oldest exercises in moral philosophy; that is, the search for a superior moral justification for selfishness.

John Stuart Mill: Conservatives are not necessarily stupid, but most stupid people are conservatives.

Mort Sahl: Liberals feel unworthy of their possessions. Conservatives feel they deserve everything they've stolen.

Ralph Waldo Emerson: Reform is affirmative, conservatism negative; conservatism goes for comfort, reform for truth.

Wendy Kaminer: A liberal is a conservative who's been arrested. A conservative is a liberal who's been mugged.

William E. Gladstone : Liberalism is trust of the people, tempered by prudence; conservatism, distrust of people, tempered by fear.

Benjamin Disraeli: A Conservative Government is an organized hypocrisy.

7. Not Understanding Your OP on one Point
Your phrase "long before those of faith did" makes no sense. You are aware that Emerson was a Unitarian minister, aren't you? Am I not understanding your point?

9. True, I meant "Traditional Christianity".

I was trying to avoid sounding like a Christian basher. When I said "faith" I was referring to the early Christians in the U.S. who were fighting against womans rights and for slavery.
