How comfortable are you with our candidates going against John McCain in the general election?
It seems as if McCain is the only Republican candidate who might give us a run for the money. The polls I've seen have him ahead of Hillary and about tied with Obama, but these polls were almost a month old. I haven't seen much in the way of negative advertising or even tough questioning directed at McCain, so his numbers might drop, or the media could keep portraying him as a moderate maverick. If John McCain were to get the nomination, are you confident that any of the Democratic candidates could beat him in November?

1. John Edwards would beat him into the ground
No other candidate has spoken to the hazards this economy is about to present this country like Edwards has...

2. Depends on the Debates
If he's in quiet, reflective down-to-earth mode, he'll sound okay but his body language is droopy and tired when he's like that. That carries over into people's perception of what he says. (Example, his 'victory' speech.')

If he's manic, he's going to look like the crazy neighbor who rigged his backyard with mines to keep the cats and dogs off his flowerbeds. (Example: Iraq for 10,000, Bomb-Bomb-Bomb Iran, etc.)

I'm not sure he's got any other gears, frankly.

3. I'm comfortable with Edwards beating him.
I think Obama and Hillary would not fare nearly as well as Edwards.

McCain is a pretty weak candidate. He doesn't project physical strength and his voice is not real strong. He can really act the fool as with the Bomb, bomb, bomb Iran bit. That really made him look stupid and cruel to boot. But his experience and knowledge could be a problem for Obama, and McCain's weakness might actually be appealing when juxtaposed against Hillary's harshness.

4. Very comfortable. McCain will go down with the Administration's Iraq non-policy
at all costs. And, in a head-to-head debate with any of our top three, I doubt he'd go the distance.

7. Very comfortable. McCain will be 72 when the election is held
and will represent the failed policies of the past, any of our top three potential candidates will beat McCain easily. The voters are sock of the war and strongly want a change with more attention paid to the economy and less on foreign military adventures. Five years is about as long as the American public will tolerate a war, especially if it is open ended and is not going well. McCain would have been very hard to beat back in 2000 if Bush hadn't stolen the nomination from him using dirty tricks, but now he is over the hill.

9. Very early on I posted over and over, we are not considering
the GOP Candidates and in turn then considering who we should
pick as our candidate. Boy did I get smacked down.

I just had to say that. Thanks

John McCain--if he catches fire in GOP Primary early is our
"bad case of indigestion" candidate.

I support Edwards and like HRC.

Now I will try to be objective. It is my honest belief that HRC
is the best candidate we have to go up against him. When you say
experience--all candidates GOP and Dems fade next to McCain.
For this reason, no one is going to say experience. Visually,
looking at the two of them side by side on a stage , Hilary
has enough gravitas, presence, yes , charm(excuse me Hilary haters)
to at least look experienced, mature(exuse me Hilary)smart and confident.

I am a very visual person.

Edwards might be able to pull it off. He has shown such growth as
a candidate.

You asked who I believe has the best chance.

19. I'm a visual person too
That's why I think the juxtaposition of a youthful, vigorous Obama against old, foggy McCain, who can barely move, would be powerful. I'm not sure how Hillary would match up against him visually. At this point, I don't think Edwards will get our nomination.

15. Remember the debates are not one on debating points
John Kerry won on points but Bush won the debate

In VP Cheney won the debate, but Edwards won the points.

It is the visuals , etc in the Politcal debates.

No matter how well he does, Obama is going to look young and risky next to McCain.

25. I think a good answer was something I read somewhere else and I forget where.
Sorry I can't give proper credit. Half of the Pubs hate McCain because he's a rebel and the other half hate Huck because he's an inexperienced nut with no love for the real corporatists. I'm looking for a low Pub turnout in Nov. no matter who they choose. I doubt any of the other Pub candidates will win the nomination.
