Edwards on Kerry: Don't stop thinking about tomorrow
John Edwards' reaction to John Kerry's decision to endorse Barack Obama: You're so 2004.

OK, so that's not what Edwards is saying exactly, but he has come about as close as he can to putting it that way without looking entirely ungrateful for the fact that Kerry chose him as his running mate four years ago.

"Our country and our party are stronger because of John's service, and I respect his decision," Edwards said in a statement released by his campaign. "When we were running against each other and on the same ticket, John and I agreed on many issues. I continue to believe that this election is about the future, not the past, and that the country needs a president who will fight aggressively to end the status quo and change the Washington system and to give voice to all of those whose voices are ignored in the corridors of power."

In a message to those on his massive email list, Kerry says he has decided to endorse Obama because he can "bring transformation to our country" and "build a new majority of Americans from all regions who can turn the page on the politics of Karl Rove and begin a new politics, one worthy of our nation's history and promise."

1. What a way to twist what was a completely classy response to Edwards.
I suppose I should be glad they didn't call him an Orc again. :eyes:

Salon's coverage of Edwards lately has been noticeably nasty.

7. I was sorry to read that John Kerry had effectively repudiated John
Edward's platform, which I'd thought he'd pretty much shared.

I always believed he was your best hope of a New Deal for the American people, and consequently, for the rest of the world. But Rooselvelt knew he had to take on the most powerful vested interests, head on. The same interests that made Ike fear so much for the future of your country. Reaching across the aisle to scornful and endemically pernicious oligarchs is doomed to fail pathetically.

10. Here:
Senator Kerry is a true progressive, from day one in the Senate.

Edwards himself said that Obama is a change candidate, that the only difference approach.

12. "Edwards himself said that Obama is a change candidate,"
Divide and rule. Edwards is nothing if not a shrewd strategist and tactician.

This won't diminish my immense respect for John Kerry as a man and a fighter for a decent, honest society. No-one's judgement is perfect all the time. Imo, one of his strengths would have been that he could have appealed to the decent, if somewhat economically misguided sorts among the currently disaffected Republicans, while creating a patriotic and humane government for the whole of the people of the United States.

I would have more time for the latter than for DINOs. They just need guidance away from excessive materialism. Minus the (non)voting machines, I would expect John Edwards to appeal to them as their President, when they see the sort of country and society he would help to create.

3. "Tis a head scratcher to me.
I figured he'd stay out of the primary endorsements. The only thing I can think of is that he wanted to send a thank you to Hillary for the Clinton machine support in 2004.

4. I have mixed feelings on this.
On the one hand it feels kinda disloyal of Kerry ... but I do trust that he's weighed all the factors and made a decision based on what he felt was best for the country and for the world. At this critical point in history, there's not a lot of room for sentiment to cloud one's judgment. Ultimately it's a practical choice, not a personal one (I would hope) - and it looks like Edwards isn't taking it as a personal affront. Admittedly, Obama is the candidate I know the least about, and of the "top 3" he's consistently been my 3rd choice - but Kerry's endorsement is making me take another look at him. I still won't vote for him in the primaries, not because I don't like him, but because I like others better - but I certainly won't be upset if he ends up winning.

14. Hope he'll enjoy writing the check to refund my
2004 campaign contributions. I bitterly regret making those contributions in the first place, and never more than today.

As far as his list, I don't want to BE on the mailing list of someone who chooses political expediency over what's best for the country.

Are you still on it?

The FCC has rules, drop them a line and they'll explain them to you.

17. Considering the fact that I've unsubscribed from that list
any e-mail from the Obama campaign will be marked as "spam".

Perhaps someone should explain the penalties of handing over another person's e-mail address to you for financial solicitations, hm?
