Cheney protesters to defy police

ANTI-WAR protesters plan to march through Sydney tonight in defiance of a warning from police that their actions will be illegal.

Police said plans by The Stop the War Coalition to gather at the Town Hall at 5.30pm (AEDT) and march to the US consulate would be illegal.

NSW Premier Morris Iemma has also warned protesters to back off during the three-day visit by US Vice-President Dick Cheney, which starts tonight.

The visit will involve one of the largest dignitary protection operations since the visit of US President George W Bush in October 2003. Hundreds of NSW police will be called into action as the Vice-President's motorcade travels through Sydney.
