Top military Republican to introduce own anti-surge resolution

John Byrne
Published: Monday January 22, 2007

The ranking Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee, John Warner, (R-VA) will introduce a resolution asserting that sending more troops to Iraq is a mistake later this afternoon, RAW STORY has learned.

Warner will be backed by another Republican and a "conservative Democrat."

5. HA! Betcha Shrub is burning over that story!
He can spout off at all the Dems who disagree with him, and call themunpatriotic and against the troops, but he sure can't get away with that with Warner! Wonder if he'll even be able to force a smile tomorrow night?

24. Sorry. Something happened when I tried to post the reply.
It posted VERY SLOW, and thenshowed a message that said an error had occurred. I didn't try to post it again, but for some reason, it appears to have posted it 3 times anyway! I usually don't have any problems, so if it happens again, I'll check with the mods.

HOWEVER, Ireally do think this is important! It's one thing for Smith & Hagel to speak out against Shrub. It's quite another for Warner to do so.

9. There's gotta be a hitch to this deal.
This non-binding resolution stuff failed to stop the Vietnam War when Warner was UnderSecretary of the Navy back in 1971.

I'm sure he recalls that war went on for another four years, despite the non-binding resolution that US troops should be out of Vietnam by January 1, 1972. Lieberman may remember that, as well.

Warner is old enough to remember the non-binding resolution that called for the withdrawal of American troops from Vietnam by the end of 1972. He was Nixon's Navy Under-Secretary at the time.

I'm sure Lieberman is also aware that US forces remained in Vietnam for another four years after passage.

it can't be stopped, only reversed. Congress needs to stop looking like they're doing something and fucking DO SOMETHING. 30 troops in the last two days ladies and gentlemen. HOW MANY MORE FOR A LIE????

15. There comes a time when reality intrudes on even the most closely held dreams....
... and the reality is that Bush has just been chopped off the ice floe, and is slowly drifting away into oblivion.

What else could and should Warner do?

He is leaving a career legacy that otherwise will be besmirched by continuing to support a failed policy by an incompetent President.

Make a list today of those who really support the President and his 'surge' in Iraq. Look at that list next week, and two weeks from now -- and you may not find enough supporters in Congress to need more than two hands to count them all.

19. Warner's up for re-election in '08
if he decides to run (there's been speculation that he may retire). His seat is vulnerable, especially if the other Warner (Mark) enters the race--which he may.

21. This is a big loss for Shrub. Warner has a lot of cred vis a vis the military
Just having Warner go public as opposed to this is a real slap in the face. Having him introduce legislation, even toothless legislation, is a sign of W's weakness.

I have heard that many in the military despise the Shrub.

I'm sure that the latest "surge" plans haven't made them any happier. I imagine Warner is getting an earful from these guys, just like Murtha does.

34. First Warner needs to revisit the Iraq Authorization for Use of Military Force
allowing * "at his determination" powers unconstitutionally to deploy troops based upon his own fantasies rather than what the embedded War Powers Resolution requires which is "clear" "situations" and "circumstances"...if you care to read the AUMF and the '73 WPA.

37. I think it's great that Republicans are trying to help bring our troops home.
I'm just afraid that these republicans will steal our thunder...or, should I say, I'm afraid dems will allow republicans to steal our thunder.

Dems were suppose bring our troops home, NOT say we'll fund the surge with oversight. ...That's NOT bringing our troops home.
