The war of words between GOP Chairman Fergus Cullen and Rep. Carol Shea-Porter continues.

Last week, Cullen criticized Shea-Porter's recent speech on the House floor, saying it undermined U.S. troops. Shea-Porter called on Cullen to retract his statement.

Yesterday, Cullen declined to do so. "If she's going to be against this war, she should have the courage of her convictions and vote to end funding," Cullen said.

He described last week's House debate on a resolution expressing congressional disapproval of President Bush's troop surge in Iraq as "shameful."

Shea-Porter hit back: "If Fergus Cullen has the courage of his convictions, he should go enlist, because they're having trouble meeting their quota. He's young, he's single and he's healthy. If he needs to know where the recruiters are, call me."

Let's not be so politically correct to ignore the odds. I won't venture a guess as to what percentage of us 30-something never-married men are gay, but seriously, it's a much greater percentage than of then general population if not a majority. If I were betting, that's where I'd put my money.

Furthermore, I'm having trouble locating any statement by him regarding marriage equality. Republicans oppose marriage equality more than any other demographic -- even more than self-identified evangelicals. Us gays are used to our friends and otherwise logical, liberal allies throwing us under the bus or staking out their belief that our legal equality would damage the sanctity of their second or third marriages -- but blowjobs from interns in blue dresses -- not so much. When hateful, Republicans aren't hateful to gays, e.g. Ken Mehlman or Ann Coulter, you tend to suspect some reason they don't want to have their own personal life inspected. This guy's silence ups the signals received by my gaydar, but it also means his personal life is none of my business as long as he doesn't presume mine to be any of his.

The only thing I need to know about his sexuality is the fact that he's a Republican -- ixnay to ateday epublicrays.
