Kosher claim may result in landmark ruling

An inmate's demand for a kosher diet may soon result in a landmark ruling in Missouri regarding religion in its prisons.

Norman Lee Toler , who at one time was labeled a white supremacist by Illinois authorities who said he had an "SS" tattoo and found photos of Adolf Hitler in his prison cell there, contends in a federal lawsuit that Missouri penal officials should provide him with kosher meals to accommodate his Jewish beliefs, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch said Saturday.

"It's probably going to be a historic ruling," said Brian Hauswirth, a spokesman for the Missouri Department of Corrections.

During trial this week, one prison official testified approval of Toler's motion for specialized meals could lead to enhanced religious verification in the state's prisons.

Currently, prison officials do not verify inmates' religious stances. Only 60-70 of the state's nearly 30,000 inmates profess to be Jewish.

in Missouri who could do a better job of punishing their offspring than the state ever could, plus adding a life sentence of guilt without parole.
