Another Mysterious Death In Iraq?
Another Mysterious Death In Iraq
by Paddy · Saturday January 05, 07:34 AM

It happened again on Friday. Just hours after the military announced the death of Ryan Maspeth, a TV station near where he had lived outside Pittsburgh, Pa., KDKA, learned an explanation from his family. Here is an excerpt from their report.

(snip)

Staff Sgt. Ryan D. Maseth, 24, from Shaler, died in Baghdad on Jan. 2. Doug Maseth was told his son was electrocuted in the shower but there are no other details.

Maseth says he's devastated.

"I could have put this to rest a lot better if he would have been shot or he would have got killed by an IED," he said. "I'd have said, 'OK. That's what happened.' How can you justify getting electrocuted in a shower?"

At the very least it sounds like a contractor is to blame since they are the ones with the responsibility to erect and maintain shower facilities. I'm doubting his family will get much help in the information department. Ciara Durkin's family didn't, John Tobiason's didn't and as we know, it took years and even now Pat Tillman's family still has questions.

1. Bizarre, but lots of shoddy construction in Iraq, from our wonderful
defense contractors who just wanted to make a quick profit.

2. Damn, that's horrible.

Thanks for the post. The families deserve support, no matter what.

3. First guy I ever saw die in Viet Nam was run over by a truck right in front of me.
Could just as easily have happened at home.

4. I'm not sure how this qualifies as "mysterious."
Unless there's evidence that it didn't happen the way they described. Lots of accidents happen in a combat zone; we've lost hundreds of troops in Iraq alone to falls, vehicle accidents, and other non-combat injuries. It's not less tragic, but they're not all "mysterious."

5. Perhaps not 'mysterious'
but electrocution deaths appear to be much more rare than I would have thought. Less than one in a million. In 1998, only 8 US deaths attributed to electrocution were caused by pumps/generators if I'm reading this correctly. Not sure how many of those were shower related.

People die in falls and vehicle accidents all the time. Electrocuted in the shower, now that's pretty strange.

I hope they find out how it happened.
