PROOF that single-payer, nationalized healthcare WORKS.
Edited on Sat Jan-05-08 10:04 AM by Triana
"The thing that has improved life most is the National Health Service.” - says 102-year old Eric King-Turner in Britain.

This is a great story about a sweet couple, one of whom is 87 and the other who is 102. Not sure what type of health system they've in New Zealand, where they're going but it's likely better than what we have here, at least.

"I’m also pleased to say I’m in good health – they wouldn’t let me in otherwise.”

EDIT to correct wife's age.

2. It works great if it's adequately funded.
Edited on Sat Jan-05-08 10:19 AM by Rosemary2205
IMHO, given the modern history of many different Congresses, my bet is that it will not be adequately funded. The poorest will be able to get care with long waits, better than nothing, of course -- and middle class folks who get dumped on by insurance companies will be able to get care after a long wait. But the vast majority of Americans will see an obvious decrease in services IMHO and no matter how much they scream bloody murder and vote people out of office it will not be adequately funded.

6. Sure they will, if they have the leadership to do so.
But you are absolutely correct about the funding. Take a look at Medicare: the pugs have been trying to defund Medicare for years but the people won't let them. The best they can hope for is further military entanglements that defund everything else because their isn't enough funds. SS is the same thing. It is why the pugs have needed terror as their cover.

Hopefully, our next president will be able to fight for health care that is well funded through the tax system, as it should be. A lot more of the electorate have caught on to the health care problem in this country than when HRC brought forth her plan back in Clinton's first term...

4. my parents are old enough to remember a time, here in Canada, when we didn't have Medicare
Edited on Sat Jan-05-08 03:57 PM by Lisa
They both came from working-class families, and vividly remember people going without health care because they couldn't afford to pay for it. My mom lost one of her siblings because of untreated appendicitis. (The uncle who, apparently, was most like me -- an aspiring writer.)

Soon most of that last generation to come of age before we had social programmes, will be dead. The ones I've spoken to, in their 80s and 90s, are vehemently opposed to going back to "the good old days" -- a tremendous gulf between rich and poor, and charity being administered by overworked and underfunded churches and volunteer organizations (some of which were were biased and lacked proper training and oversight).
