None of this matters anymore.
After Five years of seizures and debilitating medication they told us this morning my 19 year old has a Brain Tumor. He is home from college and now even that doesn't matter. Nothing else matters.

I am not religious but if anyone here is praying the next few days please put in a good word for Rob.

Thanks-Kevin

106. I know someone who had a brain tumor taken out recently.
Cept for the shaved head and being in post surgery aches/pains for 2 weeks, she came through fine.

She noticed she had some muscles weakness, then one day she just fell down. Then it happened again a month later. So, she did get to it quickly. However, tumors grow at different rates, so her symptoms, etc.. may not apply to you son's.

I am SO hoping that things will go well for Rob. Shame on the doctors for not figuring this out sooner. Here's hoping that now that they know what they are dealing with, they can take measures to help him..

As a parent of a child who spent years going through surgeries and spent most of his childhood going to doctors, I can sympathize with the ordeal you have ahead for your family..

:hug:s to all of you..especially young Rob

69. It is true.
Maybe it is kind of like making a journal, it just helps to type it down and look at it and then you get the feedback. During times like these that positive feedback can mean everything.

When my brother died I was just new here and did not get a lot of response but then I was out so much, it was not that people did not care. The responses I got made me feel so much better. Everyone nursed me through my kids leaving for college though. What a good group of people we have here.

I am still holding you in my thoughts. What a hard time for you all. to everyone in your family from Kansas.

58. Oh yeah -
we even bought a cemetary lot for her.

Be strong, and believe! And question everything.
I drove the doctors and nurses crazy. Remember they are working for you, and your son. I spent as much time as I could researching her disease on the internet. I would go in with a list of questions that I wanted answered. And if I didn't see the doctor, I would leave it and expect answers.

When my daughter left the hospital after months of being there, her doctor told me that because of my persistance, I made them try harder to save her. And they did.

You already know how to fight - heck - you are a DUer! Now go fight for what is really important.

and if you haven't done so already please get an appointment ASAP at the best hospital or specialists for this - for an independent second opinion.

Please keep us updated when you can. Know that we care. Take care of yourself, and take care of your family.

edited to add: just saw upthread details that you are going to a specialist, and other info...very glad to hear it, and I'm sure your son will be in excellent hands.

109. I'm sorry to hear this.

Disclaimer: The following is for information only and is not intended to treat, alleviate or cure any disease or condition of the human body.

There are other ways to treat this.

Information at this website:
www.curenaturalicancro.com
The Medical Establishment in Italy took this doctor's license away because he cured a brain tumor with baking soda in an IV!!

I was told by an M.D., Gurney Pearsall, practicing in Houston, that cancer can be cured in just a few weeks with Sodium Ascorbate IVs (Vitamin C) in large doses (20 to 50 grams at a time).

This M.D. also told me that the M.D. Anderson Hospital in Houston (The largest cancer institute in the world) KNOWS that Vitamin C works, but refuses to use it. Bastards.

IV drips using ozone (O3) to hyper-oxygenate the blood have also been used. Naturopaths and others have used these.

If you go with conventional treatment, I wish you the best as well. I lost a sister to an aggressive brain tumor and I know the depths of hell. I won't be going to hell after I die, as I have already lived through it on earth, I believe.

116. Hey sellitman...
My mom's best friend had a college aged son that developed a brain tumor. When he was hospitalized they told his mom that he had about 3 to 5 days to live. That was about 5 years ago.

He finished college, got a job as an engineer, and this year got married.

Hang in there, and know we are all rooting for you, your son, and your family.

Peace...

Three years ago, my wife developed a brain tumor that affected her hearing/balance.

Right now, she's in the bathroom, drying her hair. :) No residual effects at this point -- all's fine.
I realize that your situation is quite different, but we were short on hope also.

You've got excellent medical care, and the support of everyone here, and that's far more than a good start.

All good thoughts for Rob's complete and speedy recovery! Hang in there -- :grouphug:

fyi, a couple of years ago my brother was working on a car with his best friend of 30+ years in the friend's garage . . . without warning, the friend collapsed and went into convulsions . . . my brother called 911, his friend was taken to a hospital and diagnosed with a brain tumor . . . they operated soon thereafter to remove it . . .

today, my brother and his friend are working together in the home improvement/renovation business, and doing quite well . . . no after effects of the tumor at all . . . so there is hope in modern medicine . . .

good luck and God bless . . .

134. You're right. One of my favorite shows is Discovery Health Channel's
Mystery Diagnosis. Many stories of people with symptoms that numerous docs couldn't diagnose what was causing them. After years, the person finally connects with someone who gets it and provides life saving treatment. There is hope--including stories of brain tumors.

Here's hoping all goes well for your son.

135. My Son and my good friend both have had brain tumors
I know what you are feeling. In 1998 my son had one seizure and after a scan they saw the tumor. He had Glioblastma Multiforme brain tumor. He had 3 operations, chemo and rad. He fought the good fight but died in 1999 after 18 month battle.

My friend was diagnosed after fainting in 2002. She is still around and the tumor was slow growing until 2006 when she had an operation and has had rad since. She is fine, needs to sleep more than most of us but she is fine. She is being watched. She had a different type of tumor than my son so how your son fairs it depends on the tumor and treatment. We are Canadian up her and all new treatments were done. It didn't cost us a thing for the doctors, meds or hospital. I found the medical people ready and willing to try everything. No HMO's to consult up here.

I do suggest you log on to http://www.virtualtrials.com/

That link is a wealth of information and there is a brain tumor support list that I was on for a few years.

You may want to check out this as well. This is interesting.
http://www.cbc.ca/health/story/2007/10/04/fundraising-dca.html

"Industry wouldn't fund cancer drug, so Alberta town rode to the rescue
excerpt:
Even though the drug shrinks cancerous tumors, no pharmaceutical companies wanted to fund human trials because they couldn't make enough money selling it. And that's when Peace River stepped in.
......When the University of Alberta scientists announced on Sept. 26 that it would be beginning human trials, the researchers applauded the efforts of the ordinary people in Peace River and elsewhere who rallied to raise money for the cause.
"It should inspire other places to develop generic drugs without the support of the industry," lead investigator Dr. Evangelos Michelakis said at a news conference.
Health Canada approved DCA for the limited trial on people with an aggressive form of brain cancer called glioblastoma. The researchers are looking for 50 patients in Edmonton who have already tried chemotherapy, surgery or radiation with no success. The drug is to be tested over the next 18 months."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dichloroacetic_acid

I know the doctors involved have a clinic in Toronto. I found this article last October/November.

Any time you need to rant or need to have a question you can email me here on DU.
My son and husband were both being treated for cancers at the same time. They were diagnosed two months apart.
It's a hard fight but please try to find the happy moments and laugh together as I did with my guys. I hope all turns out well for your son. There is hope.

137. A prayer to you from a feeble Buddhist.
I hope that this small reflection of my poor practice brings you some comfort.

May all beings everywhere plagued
with sufferings of body and mind
quickly be freed from their illnesses.
May those frightened cease to be afraid,
and may those bound be free.
May the powerless find power,
and may people think of befriending
one another.
May those who find themselves in trackless,
fearful wilderness---
the children, the age, the unprotected--
be guarded by beneficial celestials,
and may they swiftly attain Buddhahood

153. I've got a friend with a brain tumor.
I went to his wedding three years ago. He wore a top hat because he was bald from the chemo. He's back to work now and everything.

He does take anti-seizure meds. Did I mention they just bought a house?

It's not over. (Do your research. He went down south for treatment. Duke?)

162. I know where you're coming from--best of luck to you and your son!
There is always hope. My brother-in-law was diagnosed with the worst
type of brain tumor you can have (stage 4 glioblastoma), and if the
original diagnosis had been correct, he would have been dead a year ago.
Instead he is still living a close to normal life (no more driving, but
that is about his only restriction).

As long as there is life, there is hope. Never lose that.

163. I'm so sorry, and I can relate. I've *relatively* taken somewhat of a vacation from
politics in the past year and a half or so, between a divorce, taking care of my mother until she passed away, and then dealing with all the legal/financial/house full of stuff aftermath. All the best to your son and your family.

164. We will pray today, and please get a notebook.
In that notebook, put three folders. One's for the doctors, so anything they give you goes in that and all their contact info and names and hours go on the front of it. One's for the insurance, so anything you get from them goes on one side and anything you need to send them (but always keep a copy for yourself) goes on the other. The last is for the pharmacy, and put on the outside a list of meds he's on with dosages, expiration dates and numbers of refills. Inside that folder put a list of any reactions to meds that he has, the papers from the pharmacy, etc.

In the notebook, it's also good to have a pad of paper to write down questions and the answers to them for when you see the doctor. Sometimes it helps just to hand that to the doctor to make sure you get all your questions answered.

I've found, in my health crap, that it really helps to have it all in one notebook. That way, it's all in one place, and I keep that with me. If my doctor starts listing tests I need or meds I have to take, I can write it all down and then keep track of reactions. Heck, now I have to start notebooks for the kids for their asthma. *sigh* Just when you think you'll remember something, you'll forget. I forget meds I'm allergic to all the time when I talk with nurses and doctors, so I've leaned on Hubby to remember. That's stilly--writing down a list is best.

 The new techniques they have in neurosurgery are amazing, and people are doing better and better all the time. I'll be praying that it goes easily and the specialist does an amazing job and that there are no post-op problems.

if you look online at the polymva, I believe this product has helped children with brain tumors-I also had a child with cancer and you can beat it if you look for alternative treatments.

180. WRONG!!!! ALL of this matterns MORE THAN EVER
You have my deepest sympathies. Like you, I am also not the praying type. I wish you all the best that our health care system can deliver.

But 2 points:

1) If this happens to one of the 45,000,000 without health insurance, it is a death sentence, and also a ticket to bankruptcy. I hope you are not among them, but this is happening every day to people who don't have any way to deal with it financially.

2) Cancer is not the normal state. Cancer is what happens when we destroy our environment and pollute our food chain.

For you personally, you must put all your energies into helping Rob come through this. For you, nothing else can matter while this is going on. But for the rest of us who don't have a 19-year old in this situation today, this is why we MUST FIGHT and WE MUST WIN.

This matters more than ever. If you ever wonder how how important it is to throw out the corporate crooks and polluters, think of Rob. You go fight the good fight for Rob and we'll fight to change the system that has created this. It takes a team.

Here's to a full recovery.
