Helmsley's $12M dog feasts on Alpo

Trouble's gone slummin'.

Leona Helmsley's pooch - which was left a staggering $12 million by the Queen of Mean - has traded caviar for Alpo.

And the change seems to agree with her.

The white Maltese has gained a pound since security concerns prompted a move from Helmsley's Connecticut estate to a humbler life in Sarasota, Fla.

"I think she has welcomed the change," the dog's handler, John Codey, told CBS' "The Early Show."

Previously, Trouble had every meal prepared by a personal chef - including her favorite, crab cakes - and was hand-fed by Helmsley's staff. Now she eats her dog food right out of the can, Codey said.

6. Good for Leona?
12 million dollars for a fucking dog when there are many worthy charities that do things like feed hungry children.

Good for Leona. Jesus Christ.

9. "fucking dog"?Don't start. That dog was her family. I am thinking of leaving what little i have to

my cats.they are my furbabies and as precious to me as other peoples children are to them.Charity can have the money when they are gone.Leona left tons to charity and the rest will go to charity when the pooch is gone. Some of us really care about our pets and consider them family.A doggie woth that much while alive has a better chance of a long life! Leona was protecting her furbaby and your remark is mean spirited.

13. I'm an animal lover myself.
But giving 12 million dollars for a dog is unconscionable by any decent person's standard.

the dog's money is going to people too if you really think about it.. her handlers and the security for the poor animal because creeps want to dog-nap it.

12. And 12 million to a fucking dog.
$10,000 dollars would have assured that dog a happy life.

15. You don't get it do you? The money "protects " the dogs life.
As long as the dog "lives' the caretakers have access to the income. It behooves them to keep the doggie alive.$10,000 wouldn't buy as long a life! And if you ever paid vet bills, $10,000 is nothing.I paid $3,000 on my cat who passed last year. She had a predecessor years ago that cost $5,000! I recently heard about a women that paid $8,000 for a back operation on her Dachshund. Vet bills are expensive!

3. Uh...do you have any idea of the kind of gas produced by caviar and crabcakes?
I wouldn't let that fart-beast in my home - I already have a husband who drives me to open windows in minus 30.

It would be Alpo and a cork if I owned that dog.

3 Maryland Dogs Inherit $800,000 From Master; Feast On Weekly Spaghetti Dinners

December 31, 2007 5:41 a.m. EST

Hagerstown, MD (AHN) - Buckshot, Katie and Obu-Jet used to be stray dogs but with an $800,000 inheritance from their deceased owner, they can now live the high life.

The Maryland dogs inherited $400,000 and a house in Hagerstown with roughly the same value when master Ken Kemper died of cancer last year.

The beagle and two Labrador now live at their house and caretaker Roy Grady is tending to their needs.

With the money, they get excellent health care. Veterinary bills of Katie ran up to $6,000 when she broke her legs and hip last summer.

They could also afford weekly spaghetti dinners at a local restaurant. Grady said the treats come complete with meatballs and garlic bread.
