The Early Word: Farewell, 2007

By Ariel Alexovich

Along with most Americans, the presidential candidates will be donning their finest tonight at various New Year’s Eve parties. Noisemakers and champagne will be kept to a minimum, however, as they all hope to be entertaining at a bigger celebration late on Jan. 3.

Hillary Rodham Clinton, Mike Huckabee, Bill Richardson and Mitt Romney are holding big bashes in Des Moines. John Edwards’s team will be in Mason City, and Chris Dodd’s group will be celebrating in Dubuque. Barack Obama will ring in the New Year in low-key style, via a conference call with his staff stationed around Iowa.

Unlike most candidates, John McCain will welcome 2008 from New Hampshire, and Rudy Giuliani will be at home in New York.

1. ...and Rudy Giuliani will be at home in New York
You might as well stick a fork in his campaign.
