What efforts are underway to block an attack on Iran?
Edited on Tue Feb-20-07 08:30 PM by joemurphy
I'd heard statements from certain senators (like Biden) but is anything really being done? Biden, in my opinion, is always more talk than action.

1. i have heard of nothing to speak of
so far myself. there seems to be lots of talk around "if he does it, then..." and "he doesn't have the authority to do that" but none of the things i'm hearing takes into account that the president is utterly without scruples and is fully capable of a false flag operation or otherwise provoking iran into a conflict. to my mind prohibiting a military conflict with iran is the number one order of business right now. plan to start calling congress again tomorrow myself, but i've done that before and it feels like it goes into a black hole.

3. That's my take on it too.
Frankly, I can't think of any scenario that would justify Bush acting on his own without going to Congress first. But I know he's crazy enough and there are enough Republican enablers around that would back anything he did on his own. This is very discouraging to me. Congress is being very gutless about confronting Bush on this.

2. There are resolutions that Bush cannot attack Iran without...
...Congressional authorizaion.

House and Senate

Ask your Senators and Representative to cosponsor.

4. Bush could drive a Mack Truck through the House one.
(b) Requirements- Absent a national emergency created by attack by Iran, or a demonstrably imminent attack by Iran, upon the United States, its territories or possessions or its armed forces, the President shall consult with Congress, and receive specific authorization pursuant to law from Congress, prior to initiating any use of military force against Iran.

Bush could just claim that the Iranians are planning to attack our troops in Iraq and then act without consulting Congress if I read the above correctly.

5. I'm kind of hoping
that when Bush give's the order to attack, he'll be arrested instead.

10. so there will have to be more senseless deaths when they hopefully
haul his a$$ off. Apparently we know that they are instigating the Iranians, and again this thuggish regime will just kill more and more people, and to this day they are still denying they will not provoke an attack on Iran. Ahmadinejad said today if they disarm we should disarm also, sounds good to me.

6.  I don't know what to say here .
I recall bush could attack and have 60 days to go to congress .

I do think bush and cheney are crazy enough to do this . I say this because there are a few reliable people in the know who fear this happening , otherwise why would they even be so concerned ?

This worries me as if should because bush still has some sort of power given to him in 2002 about pre-emptive stikes , i forget the exact term applied to this war power act .

8. the thing is bush considers us and the constitution to be
petty annoyances at best. our democracy and our concerns couldn't be further from his mind. in the downing street minutes they actively considered faking a UN plane for iraq to attack to provoke a conflict. the thing is, all they have to do is stage something and then go forward. whether it was real or not, whether it warranted an attack or not, that's all stuff we in the reality-based community will be doing after the fact as the idiot king continues to do whatever he wants. how hard is it going to be to ram a small boat filled with explosives into one of our carriers in the gulf and then say there is evidence that iran did it? we've seen what this bunch thinks of evidence.
