Moral dilemma
Edited on Mon Dec-24-07 10:02 PM by Timefortruth
A driver of the car in front of us late tonight had little control. The car crossed the double line completely several times, took almost a minute to react to green lights, and had a baby carrier on the dash board. In the dark it didn't look like the carrier had a baby in it, but we couldn't tell for sure. We reported it to 911.

In all probability the police will not be able to find the car, but I feel guilty in a way.

on edit:

My guilt was misplaced. Mostly I feel sad, not guilty.

2. I think you did the right thing. If that person was at home in his/her recliner
slamming down brews in front of the TV, that's one thing. When s/he gets on the road and can hurt or kill others, that's another.

3. Perhaps you read too much Dostoevsky
A person driving like that IS a danger. If the police had seen someone driving like that they would clearly have had probable cause for a stop.

Give yourself a break.

6. Why the hell would you feel guilty?!?
Screw the drunk drivers!!

Maybe they can find them and stop them and did and maybe you saved someone's life.

Maybe it was someone having a heart attack or a seizure.

You shouldn't feel guilty at all.

8. You are right.
The consequences of that driver's getting caught is nothing in comparison to what would have happened if he/she had destroyed a family.

And maybe everyone made it home safely.

9. I wish someone had called and stopped the drunk that crushed my world....
.... and my vertebrae and made my life hard.

Thanks for doing that!

7. Any number of ailments could cause someone to begin to drive
erratically. You might have witnessed a driver in physical distress just as likely as a drunk driver ... or one falling asleep at the wheel after a long drive. Many things might have caused such driving ... and you might have been the saving grace for that person just as easily as you believe you might have caused them trouble.

Give yourself a break ... and think how grateful you would be if you were ill behind the wheel.

:)

10. I was behind one also tonight, but did not have a cellphone....
Whomever was behind the wheel had not even turned their lights on, and it was well after dark. Not only did they drive way under the speed limit, they kept crossing over the double line.

If I HAD a cellphone, I would have called in their plates.
I hope nobody managed to get hurt.

11. So if the car had only had adults in it, no concern?
The child's life is somehow of more concern? I guess some are a little more equal.

12. It is instinctive for humans
to protect the young. Perhaps it is wrong, but it is normal.
