Hungary may legalize porn involving 14- to 17-year-olds for home use

BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) — A bill modifying Hungary's penal code could allow pornographic material involving 14- to 17-year-olds to be made and kept for personal use.

The Justice Ministry said the draft proposal, presented last month by Hungarian Justice Minister Jozsef Petretei, was in line with European Union norms which give members states the right to regulate the issue at national level.

But Opposition lawmakers attacked the proposal as "legalized pedophilia" and a family welfare group described it as "the waiting room of prostitution."

Petretei said Monday that the proposal had taken into account the age in Hungary — 14 — at which consensual sexual relations are allowed.

because I do believe that it will be a boon for new commercial child porn sources, even though that will remain illegal.

However, an 18 and 17yo married couple should be able to take private pictures for their personal use without the fear of prosecution.

I'm not sure what I think about Hungary's age of consent. I wouldn't want any of the 14 year olds I've met involved in the porn industry, sexually active among their peers or not. I certainly don't want adults taking advantage of them, and the thought of it mostly sickens me. It'll be scary to see what happens.

If their age of sexual consent is 14, then I see no reason why this also shouldn't be legal there.

I think the greater issue is whether or not 14 is appropriate as an age of consent, but I guess that's a different debate.

Recently in Florida, two 16-year-olds were convicted of possessing and distributing child pornography. The "porn" in question was pictures the two of them took together. The "distribution" in question was the girl e-mailing the pictures to the boy. There was no question that the sex was consensual, and that it was legal for them to have sex; however, they are now "sex offenders" for the rest of their lives for taking pictures of it.

This law eliminates that absolutely ridiculous "gotcha."
