Out of Curiosity: Will support of Bloomberg be allowed here if he runs for POTUS
Edited on Fri Dec-21-07 05:07 PM by Flabbergasted
Michael Rubens Bloomberg (born 14 February 1942) is an American businessman, founder of Bloomberg L.P., and the Mayor of New York City. Although a lifelong Democrat, he ran on the Republican ballot and was elected mayor in 2001, then reelected to a second term in 2005. He is frequently mentioned as a possible independent candidate for the 2008 presidential election and fueled that speculation when he left the Republican Party in June 2007. <2> He denies any plans to run, however, and says the news media has concocted his possible presidential bid.

If no, what is the specific reasoning?

Sorry if this was asked before.

4. No, specifically because he's not the Democratic candidate
he could be more progressive or more liberal than the Dem candidate but DU does not allow support for third party candidates. While I don't agree with the rule, and I've seen some good members get tombstoned for too much green party talk, it's the way it is..

7. No, because of the rules:
"Members are expected to be generally supportive of progressive ideals, and to support Democratic candidates for political office."

If he were to run against a Democratic candidate for any post, then support wouldn't be allowed. Someone like Bernie Sanders, who has an agreement with his local Democratic party that they won't run against him, is fine. Once Joe Lieberman was running as an independent against a Democrat, support for him wasn't allowed here (not sure if anyone wanted to, by that stage ...). The "lifelong Democrat" label was more applicable to him than to Bloomberg.

9. Unless he runs as a Democrat (a real one, not a Joe Lieberman one)
then I should hope not.

He's probably a dandy guy, but if he was interested, he should have joined the Dem. primaries and duked it out with everyone else.

A third-party run by Bloomberg would hurt us. I don't see why DU ought to support that.

11. Is he a Democrat? "Is" is present tense, as Bill Clinton was attempting to point out to his
interrogators.

12. There will be a Democratic nominee. I will vote for her or him.
Bloomberg was a Republican more recently than a Democrat. The rules of this board are pretty explicit about party loyalty. I'm sure there's plenty of other venues where pro-Bloomberg discussions can be enjoyed.
