"They're taking Christ out of Christmas!" she screamed.
I was standing in checkout line at Hastings (bookstore, movies, etc) when the woman in front of me said this and said there were "a whole bunch of stores where the employees were told they couldn't say "'Merry Christmas'".

"Where?" I asked. "What stores?"

"A whole bunch of them!" she replied, but she couldn't name a single one. She said she had received the news in an email.

I muttered something about the "damn corporations trying to sell, sell, sell," but finished it up with I haven't met anyone who wouldn't say MC. The store clerk said, "I think I'll just stick with 'Have a nice day.'" I laughed and wished her a very Happy Yule since today is Winter Solstice.

1. My granny would have said two things:
1) Who´s "they"?

2) Don´t get them panties in a wad.

17. My mother's comment wouldn't be repeatable
and would probably get alerted here on DU. My dad's comment would have blistered the paint on the walls.

I like to think I inherited the best of both.

That screaming woman will undoubtedly hate herself into an early grave. Pity her.

3. Does it occur to this woman that not everyone celebrates Christmas?
Then again, I'm sure she'd say that was unAmerican and we deserve whatever we get, right?

LOL,
Julie

6. She would have had a fit if she were back in Puritan days.
They didn't allow the celebration of Christmas, because it was sinful pageantry. I guess those Puritans must not have considered themselves Christian or something.

15. But by the 1830s it was perfectly fine to say Merry Christmas
as you got falling down drunk - which was the reason for the season.

8. These people have no idea how stupid they look with these outbursts.
One might ask them about the etymology of the word "holiday", but they wouldn't know what you were asking.

11. It's the same with every outburst by the religious right....
When you ask for specific information, with regards to why they are outraged by attacks on them, all you hear is the sound of a cricket.

16. typical
Can't say I am surprised. There is a nutjob in a debate group
I am in on CafeMom who is offended when store clerks tell her
"Happy Holidays" instead of Merry Christmas. I told
her she needs to get a life if that is all she has to worry
about. Of course she also has a problem with a non-Christian
like myself celebrating Christmas or spelling it Xmas.

19. We need to take the Christmas out of Christ.
It's nothing more than a tool to enrich mega corporations. I do give, receive and celebrate but the commercial aspect sometimes makes me feel sick. :dem:
