There's an irony to the common assertion by hawks that the left is made up of weak-willed surrender-bots. It's easy for armchair hawks to talk about will and guts and to push for the mass killing of faceless subhumans half a world away. It's not so easy to personally go face to face with anti-union goons, racist southern sheriffs, national guard troops with rifles and an angry leader. People working for real democracy have ended up beaten to death, or buried in swamps, with bullet holes. Like Ghandi's disciples, who walked into police batons, picked themselves up and faced beatings again and again, to see England in time forced to leave in shame,- like them, countless humble Americans have felt the brutality of power and wealth, to one day bring a little justice to our lives. Even the not-so-humble; Huey Long, who talked of an end to "rich men's wars" and of Social Security (in 1927!),- shot dead. Martin Luther King, who ended the poll tax and made citizens of millions,- shot dead. The same dirge is sung wherever humanity defies brutality.
That hawkish neocon who said that if fellow neocons waged total war in the Middle East, their children would sing songs about them, was wrong; we sing about Abraham and John and Martin and Bobby.
