US 'penis photo' doctor suspended

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/7155170.stm

A surgeon at a prestigious US hospital is facing a disciplinary hearing after he allegedly took a photo of a patient's penis during an operation.

Dr Adam Hansen, of Arizona's Mayo Clinic Hospital, is accused of taking the snap while conducting gallbladder surgery earlier in December.

The chief of general surgery allegedly showed the photo to fellow surgeons.

The patient is a strip club owner, Sean Dubowik, whose penis is tattooed with the words "Hot Rod".

***Okay, definitely not cool what the doctor did.

But a man who tattoos the words "Hot Rod" on his junk feels, "violated, betrayed and disgusted." :eyes: ho-kayy

1. I got an email with a photo of a guy's package that was tatooed in the
design of a friken DRAGON....both the meat AND two veg were tattooed from stem to stern in VIVID color, with one of those barbell studs as part of the deal, to boot.

The entire endeavor was just.... OUCH!!!! OUCH!!!! OUCH!!!!

As far as that doctor taking the picture goes, I wonder if old Hot Rod would have felt so violated if the Doc was Chesty McBoobsalot, the hottie gallbladder surgeon who wears six inch heels in the operating room?

8. You know, I feel funny defending a guy with "Hot Rod" tattooed on his penis, but...
...I'm really sort of surprised at the argument some DU'ers are maintaining here, which seems to be "If you're going to have something stupid/potentially embarrassing tattooed on one of your private parts, you have no grounds for invasion of privacy should a doctor see it, photograph it and send its image to anyone he wants."

Or that "He wouldn't have minded so much if the doctor was a hot busty chick."

Isn't this as poor an argument as the one in favor of warrantless wiretapping? "Why not? I don't mind having MY conversations listened in on. I have nothing to hide!"

The point is not whether you have anything to hide. The point is whether you should have to surrender your right to privacy each time you pick up a phone...or go to the hospital, where certain people may be authorized to see certain parts of you, but the whole hospital is not.

What would it have been like, I wonder, had the patient in this case been a woman, with a shaved vulva tattooed with something salacious?

Would the attitude be the same? Would it be "Well, what did she expect? Serves her right"? Or "She would have been all right with it had the doctor been six feet five of tall, dark and handsome"? Or would some people, at least, compare it to rape? As in--sure, maybe it's a dumb, tasteless thing to have tattooed on your nether parts, but even so, when she entered a hospital, did she completely surrender her right to choose who sees it and who doesn't?

Or what if the doctor hadn't taken a picture of a man's tattoo, but just had a habit of photographing the naked bodies of women on whom he operated? He found a particularly nice specimen, took a few snaps with the cell phone and added it to his "collection"? And he eventually had 4,000 of these snaps?

The point is not whether or not those treating you in a hospital should see private parts of your body--obviously, they may well need to do so. The issue is whether it's still a medical practitioner's obligation to treat you with privacy or discretion, or whether he/she can note something interesting or unusual about your body and either keep his own "personal record" of it, or show it to others as if he's selling tickets.

Yes, we live in a foolishly litigious society. And a guy with "HOT ROD" tattooed on his penis doesn't make the best candidate for victimhood, just as, for some people, prostitutes don't make convincing rape victims. But in this case, I find myself siding with him. Not because he's the brightest tool in the shed, but because of the privacy principle.

I don't think anyone is defending the physician.

The story is hysterical.

Here you have a strip club owner with the words "Hot Rod" tattooed on his penis acting all distraught and embarrassed about people seeing the art work.

Talk about mock outrage.

Of course he shouldn't have been photographed, but I think your missing the point of the comments.

17. "but the whole hospital is not."
Actually happens more often than you might think. Probably the least private place is a hospital.

MDs are some of the most curious monkeys out there. If there is something unusual about your case or your anatomy, say a totally tattooed dick, you'd better believe your info will be passed around faster than water dances in a hot frying pan.

28. I'm astounded at your lack of a sense of humor. Actually.
No one is 'seriously' suggesting that a doc has a right to photograph anyone while they are knocked out and without their consent.

But, unless you run in unusual circles, having HOT ROD tattooed on your dick is NOT an average event, and this story reads like a cheap comedy film.

That said, it's apparent that you had better luck than Hot Rod did in the operating theatre--your humorectomy was completely successful.

Go, and laugh no more.

Space may have been an issue.

He invited a guy, older gentleman, well maybe late 50ish, to be in the audience when Marilyn Manson was there because MM has expressed interest in penis tatttooing. So, hey might as well see what the finished product looks like, right. This guy did have a dragon tattooed on his, according to Manson, who saw it.

edit: And while I don't approve of taking photos, :spank: , you're nuts if you don't think medical personnel don't make fun of patients when they aren't aware.

23. BUT
There's a big difference between making anonymous fun and taking a picture without consent and showing it around. An xray of a barbie up a butt is done as a conseted part of a medical visit, and, unless a lead nameplate was also inserted, pretty much anonymous. A picture of someone penis taken during a surgery that doesn't go anywhere NEAR the penis is reprehensible.

It flew in the window while he was taking a shower...! He slipped, he fell!!

Ah yes, of course! That's how it happened! How silly of the staff not to have seen what was so self-evident!

22. Surgery is a time of great vulnerability
You are asleep and totally unable to defend yourself from anything. People can do whatever they fucking want and you can't stop it. Completely and utterly powerless and helpless. There's a great deal of trust placed when consenting to surgery. The guy could have "take a picture of this" tattooed across his johnson and the doctor would STILL be completely in the wrong. He was hired to remove the guys gallbladder, not play with his dick.

His feelings of violation, betrayal, and disgust are COMPLETELY valid and understandable, no matter how you or anyone else feel about his dick or job.

26. You're completely right. That doctor deserves censure.
In order for a doctor to take a photo of a patient, he has to get informed consent (has to tell what the picture will really be used for and the patient has to agree to that). Taking photos of sedated patients as a joke is beyond wrong. I would be on a rampage with the state medical board if someone did that to me.
