4. Putin Deserved it.

the person of the year is supposed to be the guy who had the biggest effect that year, and not necessarily an honor. With Putin killing spies and journalists and boosting weapons production there is no denying this guy's impact this year. Oh yeah, and don't forget he is doing everything he can to return the russian empire and keep his position in power at the expense of democracy.

5. Some years back, Time's Person of the Year was "The Computer." So it means nothing whatsoever.

11. last year it was "You"
The answer is, you do. And for seizing the reins of the global media, for founding and framing the new digital democracy, for working for nothing and beating the pros at their own game, TIME's Person of the Year for 2006 is you.

8. well they did consider Petraeus
but their cover logo is red enough without all the blood on his hands added to it.

true you don't have to be on the good side to be the most influential like Putin, Hitler was named as well.

7. Joseph Stalin was once Time's Man of the Year.
Of course, back then it was called "Man of the Year." Today, it has changed to "Person of the Year" for obvious reasons.

9. Putin is not as homicidial as Stalin
but he is clearly moving Russia back into an authoritarian system, and even more importantly back into a competitive stance with regards to the US. For all of Al gore's virtues, Putin still has had a bigger impact on this world in 2007.

10. Totally outrageous. PUTIN had the biggest impact in 2007?!
Edited on Wed Dec-19-07 06:17 PM by WinkyDink
In-house purges and assassinations don't loom as large as global warming does.

12. He probably did have the biggest impact.
Russia is set to become the world's largest oil exporter after Saudi Arabia. They were very blunt about the US not putting interceptor missiles into Poland and the Czech Republic, and they were instrumental in helping with the Iranians. The Russians recently test-fired missiles designed to defeat the US missile shield.

13. Time's traditional bias against Dems
The last Dem to be the sole 'Person of the Year' was Bill Clinton in 1992. In that 15 year period Republicans have been named four times. When the GOP took control of Congress Newt Ginrich was named, but not Nancy Pelosi last year despite her being the first female speaker of the House in history. George Bush was named twice in 2000 and 2004. However, Clinton wasn't named when he was re-elected in 1996.
