17. some people think all kids should go to pre-school
so we can compete better with other countries. We called it nursery school.

Personally I think it's gotten out of hand and soon we'll be taking kids away once they're weened.

I've also been called sexist once in awhile and I don't understand that issue anyway.

I did find this on the website if you really care.

Increasing access to high-quality early education and helping to create Early Head Start.

19. Done right, pre-school helps get kids ready for school, which helps
Sadly, we since we don't do school right anymore, in reality, it is just help with childcare so parents with young kids don't miss as much work and their bosses make more $$

Yeah, I AM that cynical, AND I have done some gigs with pre-school.

27. Honestly, I think this as would go right by most people.
I don't have children, so this isn't something I would know about or think about and the term pre-K would go right over my head. I'd think I was getting a Kmart gift card for Christmas.

29. They get some practice at classroom settings, activities, moving in line and such
Plus, there usually is someone reading to them, which, sadly, too many have never experienced.

They get activities that help them with fine motor skills, listening and following instructions, writing, color/shape recognition and so on.

It is sad how many kids get nada from parents who then expect miracles from the schools. My cousin taught jr hi kids for years in an inner-city. very poor and violent school. Moved to CA & taught special ed for really disturbed kids for several years. She needed a break & signed on for kindergarten in a fairly comfy middle class area. First week, she cried EVERY night. Most of the kids did not know colors, had NO idea that written symbols (letters of the alphabet) had any meaning as sounds/language, only one could write his name, none had any idea about listening and following any instruction. She said it was like the parents all kept the kids in a closet until they were 5 and could go to school.

THAT is what pre-school helps avoid. Then, when they start school, teachers should actually be able to teach.

Sadly, teachers have too many other things to do to meet all the administrative layers piled on them now. And too many parents/communities expect teachers to do with a room full of unsocialized children what parents wouldn't do when the kids were not in school yet.

So, pre-school is a bit too much of just helping with child care instead of really living up to its potential of getting the kids REALLY comfortable with classroom life and inspiring them to enjoy school.

The concept and aim is great. Sadly, most places only pretend to really care about education in K-12. As a society, our walk does not come close to our talk re educating children.

But, kids in a classroom make it easier to keep mom and dad at work, being basic wage slaves to an exploitive system, that again, does not give a shit about kids and family, despite all the hype about values.

OK, I'm coming off the soapbox now.

Voting for the Kyle-Lieberman bill doesn't inspire alot of confidence as far as "bringing the troops home" goes, and her idea of "universal healthcare" is mandating you hand money to the insurance industry. That will be a disaster.

40. Thanks for sharing that. It's very nicely done. --And "pre-K" is very clear to parents...
Public school education is called K - 12, for Kindergarten through 12th grade. That's what the K is for.

I think most moms are now working outside the home, and preschool/daycare is unbelievably expensive. Preschool/daycare quality is also extremely uneven.

LBJ's Head-Start program for the poor was actually very good -- and from what I understand, it works very well to this day IF FULLY FUNDED. The key is the feds have to be willing to actually spend money; it can't be another unfunded mandate.

I'm in favor of universally-available pre-K, because it would elevate the standards for preschool and make those standards uniform. All children would benefit. Making it part of free public education would benefit budget-stressed parents as well.

I'm appalled at the number of parents who fail to read to their preschoolers. I was exhausted from trying to earn a living back when, but I still made time to read to my kids. Now that I have a 3 year old grandson I read to him when he comes to visit -- and have been doing so since he could sit up in my lap. But not everyone knows to do this...

Hekate
