Ron Paul signs. I saw at least 20 signs posted along the highway
between Frederick, MD and State College, PA yesterday.

:wtf: is going on? Anyone else seen any Ron Paul signs?

1. They're all over the place here, but I'm in Texas.
I'm from the State College area, so it strikes me as very odd they'd take to him up there.

I was just surprised. Didn't see anything else.

And lately, from what my Dad tells me, it's turning blue.

in that area, and some of Paul's thoughts are probably hitting home there.

Social security started a very long time ago, and is really a
very bad system and just another form of taxation.

We should get rid of it.

136. I guess it is sorta funny isnt it
Social Security may be working for those who can collect now and I suppose that's fine. You understand though that the system and your benefits are reliant on subsequent generations of workers right? It really isn't a system to be cheering about, especially if you have another 20-30-x years before you can get yours. Laughing off the idea of doing away with it seems a little uninformed, especially when you havent any alternatives to share. The system itself admits caution about the future.

Well, it used to be that way, until the bastids looted my account. I'll be lucky now if I get a dime.

Anyone working since 1983 has been paying in at a much higher rate, and to correct a previous poster, it is not a retirement account, it is a ponzi scheme, what you have deducted this month goes to a retiree next month. The younger people of this country are going to be hosed the worst, they will pay the most and receive nothing by the time they are eligible to receive benefits, unless their kids are taxed 40%, something I don't want for my own kids.

1940 - 22 workers per retiree
today - 8 workers per retiree
2040 - 2 workers per retiree

Better get a back up plan, this crash and burn will happen.

94. He's A Two Dimensional Thinker
None of his ideas have long term merit, are non-implementable, and he's completely wrong about the fiat money system. He has ABSOLUTELY no idea what he's talking about in that regard.

And, your silly "half of income" line explains why you think he has good ideas! The society is already structured the way it is. If you don't pay the money to the federal gov't, you'll pay it to states and municipalities. And, since there is a clear advantage to economies of scale, you'll PAY MORE IN TAXES if the collection and distribution functions are broadened.

You are so off-base as to be irretrievable.

"You are so off-base as to be irretrievable."

Well, in reality you are too. Why are bratty international supermodels and hip hop artists are asking for Euros now? Why are there articles about more Canadians coming in to buy vacation houses? Sure nothing wrong with it and it sounds funny, but why? Saying he is completely wrong and that he has absolutely no idea doesn't fly on it's own.

"If you don't pay the money to the federal gov't, you'll pay it to states and municipalities."
And why is that bad? Sounds to me like your tax dollars would hit closer to home. Also, your comment on economies of scale
is dependent on your assumptions/generalizations of tax collection ("broadened").

Yeah, are you really a professor? Could explain your responses a little more if you are? Give us a chance!

160. You Don't Read For Comprehension Do You?
The point about the broadening of tax revenue collections was that it would be taxation neutral. The poster to whom i was replying was arguing that somehow we would see lower than 50% taxes if the federal gov't was not the preponderant recipient.

That flies in the face of 6 decades of fiscal data.

Look, if you want to know what's wrong with two dimensional economic constructs, go to graduate school and take some econometric modeling classes. You will find, almost instantly, that very few things work the way the simple economic theories espoused so desperately by liberterians (big or small "L") would suggest. There are too many variables with many, many interactions.

Secondly, there are no assumptions. There are only data. The data support my contentions. Weak, and simple-minded theories are all the support yours.

Lastly, if you want to know more, go back to school. I'm just another poster on this discussion board. I'm entitled to express my opinion any time i wish, in any way i wish. I'm under no obligation to give you a free economics lesson. My opinions are based upon lots of education, lots of experience, and lots of work in the field of economic modeling. If you want to believe the Randian nonsense of Ron Paul, be my guest. But, you had better get used to being disappointed.

14. Tons in Eastern Tennessee
Not really surprising that they are here, but what's surprising is the sheer number of them. This is a typically red area but since 2000 there has been a low roar and backlash against the GOP. A lot of people are fed up with the current state of things and Ron Paul resonates well with the demographics here. He'll do well but not nearly enough to give him a nomination. What will be interesting is to see where these people go after the candidates are decided. Typical wisdom would say that they would stay in the GOP fold, but I'm not so sure that they won't take a look at the Democrat's provided Hillary isn't the nominee. If she is, well, the vast majority will stay with the GOP.

26. Paul signs are up all over the Hudson Valley
I stopped and talked to one guy that was putting up signs (I was taking down some local 2007 dem signs at the time).
I told him that I really dug the whole Ron Paul anti-war / anti-drug war message.
He asked me if I wanted to hook up with the local Paulies.
I told him I was a liberal. A big government, tax and spend liberal.
I wished him well and went on my way.

33. I am from Newburgh NY my friend
Since the GOP in NY is very liberal, there is some libertarian streaks throughout the state. I've found quite a few Brooklynite Paulies, but there does not seem to be so much interest in the Hudson Valley.

Most of the folks are newbies to the political scene, or so it seems.
Most seem to think that all the gov. does is waste their tax dollars.
Most oppose the drug & Iraq wars and think that the dems support such actions:shrug:

between cutting back on wasteful spending and cutting ALL spending.

Even Reagan paid lip-service to the need to help the 'truly needy'. This disgusting man Paul said that it is a 'serious error in judgement' to think that just because someone needs medical care, they are entitled to have it. This is particularly vile, coming from a doctor. I hope he gets NOWHERE!

I saw a Ron Paul BLIMP flying over VA today...over Norfolk headed north. It was a rather surreal experience to see it flying right over Naval Station Norfolk...I don't know how that got clearance for that. A coworker says he heard it flies around here because of the rules against political billboards. A blimp is in constant motion, so billboard rules don't apply.

They are a sort of a cult following. I have also seen more Gravel, Tancreto and signs from a Republican I've never heard of than Hillary, Obama & Edwards combined. Road signs don't make a candidate, but I am wondering where the sign people are for the Dems.

One interesting thing was Romney people who have also placed a zillions signs here in NH - they removed a bunch of Paul signs that were placed close to the Romney signs.

57. Why are people surprised at this
This thread is crazy. Paul is very appealing to a large and growing segment of voters who are pissed at both parties. Looks at the approval numbers for Bush AND the Democrate controlled house/congress. There are a LOT of registered Republicans out there who want and end to the war. There are a LOT of registered Democrats out there who are already sick to death of our "front runners" doing nothing more than sniping at each other in MSM sound bytes.

Paul is running a briliant campaign by basically not campaigning at all. He's got strong grass roots appeal and he's letting them do the talking for him. If he had more main-stream support, he would be a real threat to win the Republican nomination.

Republican front runners are all in a huge race to see who can "out conservative" each other. Dems are squabbling among themselves about the usual dumb shit they squabble about. Paul is doing none of the above.

I may not like his politics, but he's playing this very, very smooth.

74. He has plenty of support here in NH
Where he may place 2nd or 3rd in the primary.

He has a large organized campaign, paid staffers, mailings, phone calls, and radio and TV ads and many thousands of supporters who canvass and put out signs for him.
There are also 1,000 people who have relocated to NH so they can work for him, for free, in addition to the paid staff.

So I don't get where you are saying he is not campaigining at all.
He is in NH this weekend and is making many stops and town halls each day, was at a very important GOP breakfast this morning.

115. I should have been more clear
His campaign appears to be actually centered around his message. I think Paul and Kucinich are pretty much the only two people running who are being mostly honest at this point about what they really stand for. I know what Kucinich and Paul want to do. I don't agree with either of them entirely, but at least I feel like they're honest. The other candidates all seem to be going to usual route of telling people what they want to hear. It's politics as usual like I said before. Republicans trying to out conservative each other. Democrats in a feeding frenzy of personal attacks and aruging over who has "more experience" as if that has anything at all to do with leadership ability.

Sure, Paul is out there campainging, making stump-stops, making speeches, doing his thing but that seems to be getting zero main stream media attention. What is getting attention from the MSM are the Paul supporters and his "outside the box" campaign tactics. Ron Paul doesn't seem to be doing much selling of Ron Paul, but his grass-roots supporters are selling him by the ton.

he is the only republican with any kind of integrity, who thinks for himself. I'd love to see him win the nomination, it would mean we could have an election about issues, not about fear mongering.

however, his social policies are nuts, people don't actually want to dismantle what we have left of a social safety net. he wouldn't win in a general election. I believe that he is at least making people think, and thats never a bad thing.

111. Actually was not too bad., They have finished 322/22 as a limited
access highway to within 10 miles of State College. And 15 is four lanes from harrisburg to frederick.

And the weather was clear.

Wouldn't want to do it on a regular basis, though!

In fact they are the only signs of any kind I see here. Same goes for bumper stickers. Other than about 3 large Fred Thompson signs I see out in the sticks while driving home there really are no other signs Democrat or Republican.

102. I believe that he's getting corporate backing under the table
Why?

Because having a Libertarian in the White House is every corporation's idea of heaven. I bet that some wealthy corporate mucky-mucks are willing to give up the war in Iraq in order to promote the candidacy of someone who believes that there should be no restrictions on business, no environmental laws, no minimum wages, low corporate taxes, etc.

But they don't publicize that part, just the part about loving guns and being against the Iraq invasion.

unless the "cracked, dispirited, and in shambles" republican grass roots (who are supposed to be voting democrat in droves in '08) got some magical mojo we've never seen before it is totally likely he's getting "assistance" from backroom channels.

rather surprised i haven't leaped to that conclusion before. it makes so much sense.

105. I'm sitting surrounded by Homemade Ron Paul signs in my office/guestroom!
My daughter's best friend is a big Ron Paul supporter. She's also living with us until she and my daughter find an affordable apartment that is not a seasonal rental.

This young lady (age 20) got together with other RP supporters and took yard signs that had been put up by candidates during the 2007 election. They've repainted the signs and have converted them to DIY Ron Paul signs.

I'm not a Ron Paul supporter by any means but I have to admire the imagination and energy. By the way, I've told her that the only way I'd let her put one on our lawn would be if other family members got to put their candidate of choices up too.

She's been nice enough offer us a couple of blank signs so we can do just that.

Our yard signs which will probably go up in January along with the Ron Paul sign.

Myself: Bill Richardson
Husband: Don't know, probably Hillary Clinton
Daughter: Either Barack Obama or Dennis Kucinich

Her folks are hardcore GOP.

She's become a non-interventionist, anti-establishment, libertarian who gets her news from Amy Goodman. Both kids are disgusted with the Democratic Congress and I can't defend them much myself.

Could be worse.

look shy and unassertive.

Ron Paul supporters are all over the web, bringing him into conversations that aren't even about him. I find it a bit disconcerting, myself, as if there's some sort of cult and the followers aren't really looking closely at their candidate's positions.

But it's also anti-establishment in a lot of ways. With 4 universities and a huge community college system, the students are a huge voice and they're pissed. They want change. That's why Dean had such a huge following here in the last election. However, when I do see a young adult w/ RP stickers are their car, I just want to yell "snap out of it!"
