1. It's a mental health issue.

Studies have shown that the average "big name" actor needs to have their ego publicly stroked at award shows at least three times per year (some addicts require as many as ten adulation "fixes" - requiring numerous trips abroad to so-called "film festivals" - to satisfy their needs). Failure to receive sufficient sycophantic fawning can lead to loss of self-worth, depression, and thoughts of appearing on reality TV shows.

3. That is so beyond belief superior, smug, and downright dumb.
How pathetically uninformed, as well.

9. You do realize these programs give awards to technicians, writers, designers and more?
These awards mean a whole hell of a lot to the people behind the camera.

10. Yes I know.

It was a joke. Sheesh.

In any case, don't all the "behind the camera" awards occupy about thirty seconds of TV time, right before one of the ad breaks? Seems 99.5% of airtime is focused on the onscreen "talent."

2. Well, see, there's MONEY involved.
DVD sales, for instance. This is a chance to grab interest from people who are, say, waiting till it comes to TV.

The awards shows are industry publicity stunts. Not having them will cost money. Which is why the WGA said NO. God bless them. Wish they were in Congress.

Essentially, the writers have punched out the producers in another profit center. The producers are, I take it, refusing to lie down.

It's going to be so charming to see who will cross that picket line.

5. My guess is that this will be the threat that breaks the strike.
The last thing in the world the producers want is an unscripted Academy Awards program with no famous person hosting.

And the writing for that requires months of work, refining and honing.

Like another poster said, it would be nice if our leaders had the same resolve as the writers do.

Writing is the seed of the entertainment industry, but writers have always been treated like shit in Hollywood. You have to beg to get paid what you were told you would get paid. It's a horribly depressing process, especially when you are first getting into it.

7. You're absolutely right -- on all points
Writers are treated like shit, and I for one am happy to see that the timing of this strike leaves the industry's annual maturbationfest in limbo. I only hope the actors support the writers. I think I heard that SAG's contract is up next year (meaning talks and a potential for a strike), so they ought to be sensitive to the writers' plight.

SOLIDARITY!!!
