MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia on Monday test-launched a new intercontinental ballistic missile, part of a system that can outperform any anti-missile system likely to be deployed, according to the officer in charge of missile forces.

The missile was launched from the Tula nuclear-powered submarine in the Barents Sea in the Arctic, a statement from the Russian navy said. It hit a designated area in the Kura testing ground on the Kamchatka Peninsula on Russia's Pacific coast.

"The launch was conducted from an underwater position as a part of training to test the readiness of the marine strategic nuclear forces," the statement said.

A spokesman would not say what type of missile was tested. Itar-Tass news agency said the Tula carried Sineva missiles commissioned by a decree from President Vladimir Putin in July.

the russians were always good chess players.

but they really didnt need a new missile to beat our useless interceptor system. all they had to do is send enough birds to overwhelm it.

the anti-missile system is performing its main task perfectly though since It was designed primarily to transfer piles of money from the public to the private sector.

Exactly, the biggest threat to our security we face we face, and you summed it up perfectly. We could only do it to ourselves...Every time I hear about how we have the best military in the world, with somebody pointing the mountains of money we spend, I turn my head and I see us bogged down in Iraq with KB&R and Blackwater getting paid 6 times more than sergeants to do things soldiers used to do. I see a war languishing on and on and on when we defeated the Axis in WWII in less time with no private contractors doing the fighting.

No foreign power could outspend us, but why bother when all they have to do is be less corrupt in their spending!

2. This is why we need to immediately triple our defense budget!
This action by the Russians vindicates the Bush administration's fear of all things non-American.

They are out to get us, I tell you.

Oh, if they were worried, why would they allow offshoring of jobs and infrastructure?

4. Oh, goodie. We can get back to the Red Bogeyman.
Fidel, Hugo, and Ahmadinajad just don't have the same panache as Putin.
