1. Kind of makes you wonder if Al Gore really wanted him or if Joe was sort of selected for him.
If Al Gore was president, he would've been against invading Iraq, but Joe Lieberman probably would've lobbied him hard to take military action. Joe Lieberman's views on the Middle East are hawkish like the right wing organization AIPAC.

28. Gore isn't the type of man who would have his VP chosen for him
At the time he thought Joe would be the best choice to help him win.

2. I doubt it, there are always the Primaries
and I did not support Lieberman when Gore chose him. It was a decision made by Gore that made me question his judgement..Democrats were trying to damn hard to escape the pummeling the Republicans were giving them over Clinton's sexual infidelities and Lieberman was the one that accepted completely everything the Republicans were dishing out and doing some dishing of his own. I wonder at the mentality of his constituents..

4. It doesn't take much to believe
that if Lieberman was our VP--he would already have been President--by impeachment or other means.
PNAC anyone?

"to heal the country," of course.

15. Bush is no loser
Bush is Forest Gump.

The moran had fortune land on his thick skull. He's had Cheney pulling his strings. All he had to do was go along. No effort, no sweat.

Now he's got a pot of money, good pension for life, fabulous health care for life, a bunch of improvements on his ranch. And he'll have his own Presidential Libary (sp).

Nope. He's no loser. We're the losers, poorer for his presidency.

13. If Gore had taken office, we might be seeing a very different Lieberman.
For one thing, there probably wouldn't have been a 9/11 or Iraq war now.

16. True - and as they didn't occur, no one would know how bad the alternative
would be. The tech boom still would have bust and the likelihood is that Gore might be seen like Carter was in the 1990s. A person who took some of the surplus and put it in a lockbox. They would claim that had he pushed huge tax cuts, like Bush would have, the economy would have avoided the downturn. The huge deficit spending, awful in the long term might have mitigated a recession.

In 2004, the Democrats would have had 3 terms in office and the country would likely be in recession. Add that Gore was nver a media favorite and you have the mirror image of 1992, where they would have spun the Republican candidate, maybe McCain or Romney, as the sunny alternative to the serious Gore. If they survived 2004, 2008 would be trying to maintain control after 16 years in power. As to challengers, consider how Gore might have used Leiberman. The area they were most in sync in was that Leiberman had a better environmental record than Gore. As global warming was Gore's passion assigning his VP to work to revive Kyoto with huge Presidential support.

If that happened, many of us would have a positive view of Leiberman. That would likely rule out a challenge from the left. With no war and Leiberman leading on the environment, why would Kerry run and on what? The challenge might be from HRC, if Gore went too populist for the DLC and she might have a challenger for that role from the second term DLC Senator, John Edwards.

19. I don't think so
I think he'd face a tough primary challenge from somebody and lose pretty badly. Or he might take the Cheney route and decline to run because of his horrible levels of popularity.

24. I think Lieberman was placed in there for the same reason LBJ was placed in 1960
Edited on Mon Dec-17-07 01:16 PM by tom_paine
The Bushies needed a Democrat who was going to Play Ball with the Bushies in case they had to Perform Executive Action as they did on 11/23/1963.

Thta's what I think. The Bushies are murderous arch-criminals and the enemies of Amnerica, perhaps our very greatesat enemies. Certainly they were best friends with the Nazis and tried to Perform Executive Action on FDR in 1934.

Don't believe me?

31. I would highly recommend viewing the movie "It's a Wonderful Life"
to get some perspective on how we all make ripples in the pond affecting each other and our behavior.

Al Gore did win, but had he took power in the White House, it's possible that

1. The tragedy of 9/11 wouldn't have happened.

2. Osama Bin Laden would have eventually been killed or caught.

3. No war in Afghanistan with no 9/11.

4. No war in Iraq regardless.

5. Liebermann might have become a different person serving under President Gore.

6. Al Gore might not have kept Liebermann as V.P. in 2004.

7. Liebermann would never have gotten the opportunity to get kissie poo with Bush.

8. I believe President Gore would have taken an early hands on approach to bring about a peace treaty between Israel and Palestine.

9. At the end of eight years as V.P., had Liebermann not changed, we still might not have supported him, if he were not progressive enough.

10. If Liebermann were V.P. Lamont might be a Senator.
