How Long Has It Been Since You Read The Constitution

From some of the comments I read it appears that some people have never read the Constitution while others are well versed in both its current form but also its history.

Where do you stand?

1. In fact I just read it last week checking for something.

2. Read the Bill of Rights this morning.

It's birthday is December 15th.

3. I gave everyone in my office a pocket Constitution on 9/17.

Most really enjoyed receiving it. One person was sort of nasty about it. Go figure.

My pocket Constitution is dog-eared, full of little sticky notes & some sections are underlined. I carry it with me everywhere -- just like Dennis! ;)

4. my students

Most of my (college freshmen) students had never read either the Declaration of Independence or the Constitution. So last semester we went over the entire Declaration, the Preamble of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, line by line. I had them each read a small section then asked them what they thought it meant. It ended up making some good discussions.


(and when we got to the Civil War I made them read the South Carolina 1860 Declaration of Independence and Alexander Stephen's "Cornerstone Speech." None of that "it wasn't over slavery" crap in my classroom!)

5. I have a pocket copy, but have not taken it w/me lately...

I use it to check up on some things and keep things in perspective when I discuss Constitutional issues.

Caveat: Some of the USSC decisions over the life of the Document have interpreted much of the Constitution in various ways, so I am not up to date on a lot of the things that have happened somewhat recently. The usual: Marberry v Madison, Roe v Wade and others have had an impact, and while I am familiar w/many decisions....I am lightyears from being a "scholar", (in fact, much to my embarassment, I have proven myself wrong on occasions...:blush: )

6. I keep a copy in my briefcase, and check it often.
