Sen. Kerry offers to broker "peace" talks (sarcasm)

Washington -- Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) wants to meet here next week in person with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and officials from Comcast and Time Warner Cable to broker a deal designed to ensure that millions of fans get to witness on cable TV whether the New England Patriots can complete their regulate season undefeated.

I know that this is what elected officials do when their constituents get on their case about something, but it still drives me nuts.

1. What drives me nuts is that the media reported on that a lot more than they did about Bali and Kerry

represented the Senate there this week-end. It says a lot about the priorities of the media.

This said, two points:

1/ Many MA people want to watch this game, so it is not unreasonable that he gets somebody on his staff to write letters.

2/ He has been working on many other things during the same time that the media did not bother to report,

2. When he returns from Bali and his participation in climate talks. BTW - this is about big media
and their manipulations against consumers and small business media.

Kerry has always led on this issue and it is one of the reasons why corpmedia was protecting Bush so vigorously in 2003 and 2004 while they targeted Kerry.

It's better to see the whole picture and not what you think you see at times. Kerry is now chair of this committee.

Kerry Seeks to Reverse FCC's "Wrongheaded Vote"

Commission Decision May Violate Laws Protecting Small Businesses; Kerry to File Resolution of Disapproval

Monday, June 2, 2003

WASHINGTON - Senator John Kerry today announced plans to file a "Resolution of Disapproval" as a means to overturn today's decision by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to raise media ownership caps and loosen various media cross-ownership rules.

Kerry will soon introduce the resolution seeking to reverse this action under the Congressional Review Act and Small Business Regulatory Enforcement Fairness Act on the grounds that the decision may violate the laws intended to protect America's small businesses and allow them an opportunity to compete.

As Ranking Member of the Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship, Kerry expressed concern that the FCC's decision will hurt localism, reduce diversity, and will allow media monopolies to flourish. This raises significant concerns about the potential negative impacts the decision will have on small businesses and their ability to compete in today's media marketplace.

In a statement released earlier today regarding the FCC's decision, Kerry said:

"Nothing is more important in a democracy than public access to debates and information, which lift up our discourse and give Americans an opportunity to make honest informed choices. Today's wrongheaded vote by the Republican members of the FCC to loosen media ownership rules shows a dangerous indifference to the consolidation of power in the hands of a few large entities rather than promoting diversity and independence at the local level. The FCC should do more than rubber stamp the business plans of narrow economic interests.

"Today's vote is a complete dereliction of duty. The Commissioners are well aware that these rules greatly influence the competitive structure of the industry and protect the public's access to multiple sources of information and media. It is the Commission's responsibility to ensure that the rules serve our national goals of diversity, competition, and localism in media. With today's vote, they shirked that responsibility and have dismissed any serious discussion about the impact of media consolidation on our own democracy."

4. It has been clear that he would love to be
brokering deals for peace in Iraq, Afghanistan, Lebanon and the in the middle east - he has spoken of what needs to be done in all these place. The ISG came closer to his ideas than anyone else's on Iraq. He also has been a great voice on global warming.

The problem is that Bush did not appoint Kerry to do all this while he cleared brush in Texas - which would in fact make many people happier.

Kerry has brokered deals from the rules of investigating for MIA/POWs with Vietnam, to how to run a war crimes tribunal in Cambodia to a nurses strike in MA to getting wider coverage of out of area baseball teams. He seems to have a talent for diplomacy. :)

7. If HRC is President, that will be an awful job - with BC being the
real Secretary of State - not to mention as a Senator he chooses his positions, as Secretary of State he represents the President.

8. I don't think she'd nominate him, sadly
I don't think there's any love lost there.

Maybe if Obama gets in though.

I'd take Attorney General as well. Something where he gets to show what he knows.

9. With any President, it might be better to stay in the Senate
First of all, MA will have just reelected him. Second, he has his finger in almost all the key issues and is very well positioned on many issues.

If you read any of the international coverage of the Bali conference, he is widely respected and may be instrumental in pushing for something that America can sign on to in 2009 (when the treaty is likely to be finished). He clearly is working on the tough issue of how to fairly involve the developing nations - which will soon overtake us as top polluters. Though he would have had incredible power to push this as President, there is something to be said for influencing the others by virtue of sound ideas, backed by eloquent defenses. (Lots of links on a DU JK thread)

It is also very likely no matter who is President that Kennedy and Kerry will have roles in writing whatever healthcare proposal there is - Kennedy chairs the committee that includes health and Kerry heads the Finance committee's subcommittee that covers health care. Every 2008 plan contains some elements of Kerry's 2004 plan.

That doesn't even consider foreign policy, where he is likely through his SFRC role to be an adviser to any Democrat - even HRC. What is likely true is that just as Kerry's real accomplishments in the past never got the coverage they deserved - the same may be true now and in the future. What is true is that he will have done a huge amount of good - even if his name is not on things. Sometime the reward is just knowing that you did good things. What's amazing, in retrospect, is that someone who fought the establishment as prominently and as well as he did on Vietnam, the Contras, and BCCI came anywhere near to getting the Presidential nomination. In each case, it wasn't just Republicans against him.

6. Love it...
...your words:
" The problem is that Bush did not appoint Kerry to do all this while he cleared brush in Texas - which would in fact make many people happier. " :7 I'd be one of those happier people.
