If you would like to see what DU was like a couple years ago
just go into the sub forums.

Go to the groups or state forums. They might be "dead" now, but they have an old school charm about them that reminds me of what DU was prior to the DLC "me too" ism that GD / GDP has become.

I love it so!

1. You poor bastard. Having to share a message board with people who think differently than you.
I can't type any more - my eyes are full of tears.

2. I usually only hang out in the smaller forums
Environment, Economy etc

there's still some of the 'usual suspect' stuff but the discussions are so much nicer

5. I wonder if it is DU changing or the whole color of our country.
Tolerance has disappeared. Those that 'have ' are scratching to keep it while the 'have nots' grow hungrier by the day. Life in America has changed period. Who would have thought that in less than eight years this country could be brought to her knees from within. Somber days in America. Peace, kim

8. That is True
but compared to other online communities, DU is probably less toxic than most other forums. Once a site gets beyond the occasional polite post and starts being a real community with recognizable personalities and long-term members, human nature takes over. Places like this are a magnet for passionate people who like to argue.

I also hang out at a NY Giants board (www.bigblueinteractive) which has a lot of long-time participants and interesting chatter, but certain members routinely abused and hounded new posters so badly that it eventually led to bannings, flame wars, and all kinds of discontent. Unmoderated boards like Yahoo I have found to be to be pits of utter bile and contumely.

I have always felt that DU mods have drawn a very good line between freedom and control. I still think so.

10. Deja Vu - 2004 Cuyahoga DU Posts are now a unique retrospective
The post-election period in 2004 is a unique perspective. There was a scramble to prevent certification of Ohio's electoral votes, and many DUers were surviving on very little sleep as the deadline approached. This archived post links several threads:
