What if Bush said, "Yeah, I ordered the water-boarding..."?
"What are you gonna do about it?"

What would the Congress do then? My guess would be the same thing they did when he came out and admitted that he ordered the spying on millions of Americans. Millions!!

And what did they do? Absolutely nothing.

He would use the same excuse for the water-boarding that he used for spying on our own people. He was doing it to protect the 'Merican people. He will not stand by and let the terrorists do what they want. He will do whatever he has to do to protect our country. They are trying to kill us. "I won't let that happen on my shift", he will say.

And what would the Congress do? What do you think?

10. But the wimps would speak with one voice and drown out the heroic types...
...issuing another statement saying, "We find it unfortunate and lamentable that a few of our more vocal members find it necessary to go on record attacking a reasoned and moderate position in regard to the president's admission that he knew that water is wet and that it could be used by evil doers in evil ways. We want to stress that the overwhelming majority of this Congress is committed to working with the president in a spirit of bipartisanship to resolve the difficult issues facing the American people. And gawd bless America... Terror. (Hiccup.) Terror. 9/11. Terror. Evil doers. Terror. (Hiccup.)"

A flurry of statements and counter-statements and clarifications to previous statements follows, until there's so much bullshit in the air that sane people everywhere begin crying out for an OJ update or, taking things to new extremes, they actually start a conversation with their spouse. Never know where that might lead... Details at 11:00.

12. 9/11... Terra... Moveon...
Have I mentioned lately how it is approximately 1 billion times more likely for a Democrat to diss mainstream progressive resources like Moveon or Michael Moore, than for a Republican to diss Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity or FreeRepublic?

18. Well, they're just trying to shed the "why do you hate America" meme...
And I'm sure we can expect them to issue a clarifying statement soon deploring the fact that they're deplored for deploring progressive resources who deplore them and their deplorable politics.

I do know that it's becoming a billion times more difficult for a Vichy Democrat to pass through the eye of a needle than it is for Hannity, Limpbaugh or the average freep -- despite the extra poundage and marshmallow bodies.

This is because the old white guy in the sky hates hypocrisy even more than he hates castor oil and doesn't take it kindly when some bloviating, self-important blue dog freshman decides that his or her job in life is to make life easy for BushCo and the corporations for which it stands, one corporatocracy, under mammon, with liberty and justice reserved for those execs on mahogany row.

That vote in the House yesterday supporting christianity and christmas made it pretty clear that we don't like or want your kind around here, boy. Go back to Russia if you can't handle hell.

Atheistofascist!

8. Bottom line--Chimpy gets to finish his second term.
Short of grilling live white babies and eating them during a press conference, I think Pelosi and Reid have written off playing chicken with the Administration.

On the senate side (I've posted this before) it's obvious that they have absolutely no ammo with which to fight--Joe Lieberman can take his bat and ball and change the Senate overnight by declaring himself a Republican, which would change all the committees.

The House, it's all about too many Bush Dogs who are afraid of upsetting their knuckle-dragging base.

So Commander Guy gets to stay until January 20, 2009, methinks. That's how Reid and Pelosi see it, no point in trying to convince them otherwise.

And frankly, I'm starting to recognize that I'll go mad if I expect a different outcome, myself.

24. Of course he* will...
There are so many skeletons in everyones closet in congress, that they can't afford to do what needs to be done.

I still worry that something is going to happen between nov 08 and jan 09.

13. Indeed--I think they do the torture thing more for sadism's sake than for efficacy.
I think they know it doesn't actually do squat to help them "fight terror" (as if they were actually interested in fighting that which keeps them elected).

I think a significant percentage of Americans believes it's a good thing to inflict pain upon people that they don't like. So long as Americans can be convinced that these evil Muslims are truly evil, then torture is A-OK.

Not all, perhaps not most, but enough to keep the GOP in business.

15. Similar to their "voter fraud" investigations.
They don't really expect to punish anyone caught voting with phony ID to any purpose, other than to keep alive the idea in likely-Republican voters' minds that "those people" (Hispanics & blacks, generally) commit "voter fraud" in league with their liberal white masters.

It is a very popular idea among right-wingers--they really do think that we bus in millions of undocumented people to vote fraudulently.

23. I absolutely know the answer to that
Make strongly worded speeches about how outraged they are and how they are going to make sure it doesn't happen again in the future. Opposing members will offer up the same kind of bullshit 'debate' going on now - on how 911 changed everything, if it saves lives it's OK and, we don't even if know if water-boarding is torture.

And what will Bush do?

He'll walk off into the sunset.
