"One thing about Vietnam, at least it never got cold"
Now THAT is an optimist.

Co-worker yesterday as we were having a conversation about the weather. He did one tour straight leg infantry-in "the bush"- Charlie the whole thing.

My jaw just about hit the floor.

1. Horse shit - I did 3 tours in the highlands and dam near froze to death sometimes
At one fire base another guy and I who had to be up early burnt the shit, even though it wasn't our job, just to get warm in the mornings. It was so god dam cold you wouldn't believe it.

2. Whoever said that was never there.
There were many nights I was very cold indeed..When all you have is a pancho liner to keep you warm it can be very unpleasant..

4. Maybe it depends on where they served.
My son's in-laws have just returned to Vietnam after their first visit here in the States. They live just outside Ho Chi Minh City and they said that our temperatures are the coldest they had ever experienced in their lives. If the temp dropped below 80 degrees they were pulling out sweaters and hats.

6. Yes it is subjective of course. what does cold really mean?
I never witnessed freezing conditions but I did witness forty degrees and when you are used to one hundred degrees, forty is indeed cold. I was told by a friend of mine that recently visited Vietnam that there was actually snow blocking some of the roads and they had to limit where they visited because of it. I never saw any snow during any of my tours there though.

8. yeah, really ... cold is subjective ... I'm sure that the energy bill for heating a house
in Tennessee in the dead of winter is a lot higher than the energy bill for heating a little-used small house on a ranch in Midland Texas in the dead of winter ...

9. My son's in-laws have never seen snow. They were really looking
forward to seeing some, but it didn't work out. When I asked them if it ever snowed in Vietnam they said that in the mountains and towards the north it did, but never where they lived. The distance from northern to southern borders is over 1,000 miles, so that could account for a great difference in climate. They were quite surprised the morning after our first freeze of the season to see that the flowers outside were dead.
