Wednesday, 12 Dec 2007 11:46
The bomb attack is one of the worst seen in Iraq for months Three car bombs exploding within minutes of each other have killed at least 40 people in the southern Iraqi city of Amara.
The first blast took place at around 10:15 local time (07:15 GMT) when a parked car exploded in a garage off the city's main street.
Crowds were quickly gathering to investigate the cause of the explosion when two further cars exploded, both within 50 yards of the initial blast. Witnesses said most casualties were from the second and third bombings, which took place close to a cinema and a market.
Over 100 people are thought to have been wounded in the attack, which is believed to be the worst terrorist incident in Iraq for several months.
Amara is the capital of Maysan province, which was handed over to Iraqi security forces by the British army in the summer of 2006.
