Shocker! House votes 372 - 9 to recognize the importance of Christianity & Christmas.
Edited on Tue Dec-11-07 09:32 PM by Tierra_y_Libertad
A statement that was much needed and will undoubtedly make America safer and more appreciative of one particular religion. No doubt similar recognition will be extended to all other religions, sects, philosophies and thoughts.

70. Why does it require precedence on DU?
There has been much wailing and gnashing of teeth about it. Meanwhile I just read that Bush vetoed another SCHIP bill. Crikey. I did not even know that Congress had passed another SCHIP bill, and apparently without a veto-proof majority.

and never mind the constitutionally mandated separation of church and state...remember that was CHURCH and state, not MOSQUE and state, not SHRINE and state, not SHUL and state....

well that ought to keep them busy and free of doing anything useful at least until christ's birthday...not that there's a single one with balls enough to show this bill up for what it is, a pandering to the religious political right. and more democrats than republicans voted for it.

15. Watch now-- Opposite Effect Will Soon Occur
I would have been voting with the naysayers.

Anything that needs to be recognized as important that cannot stand on its own merit will fail more so by this legislation, and people wonder why religion is becoming a dead zone in America. Forced thought will soon become extinct, along with the supreme being of whatever choice people make others construct out of fear. Dead is dead.

28. WTF!!!!! Explain this...????
I can't believe it - did someone serve up some spiked kool-aid on The Hill.

Just some of the text of this reads as follows:

Whereas Christians identify themselves as those who believe in the salvation from sin offered to them through the sacrifice of their savior, Jesus Christ, the Son of God, and who, out of gratitude for the gift of salvation, commit themselves to living their lives in accordance with the teachings of the Holy Bible;

Whereas Christians and Christianity have contributed greatly to the development of western civilization;

Whereas the United States, being founded as a constitutional republic in the traditions of western civilization, finds much in its history that points observers back to its roots in Christianity;

Whereas on December 25 of each calendar year, American Christians observe Christmas, the holiday celebrating the birth of their savior, Jesus Christ;

Whereas for Christians, Christmas is celebrated as a recognition of God's redemption, mercy, and Grace; and...<snip>

"As it turns out, not everyone was impressed with King’s spiteful stunt. When the Christmas-is-important measure came up last night, nine Democrats voted against it. Moreover, 10 voted “present” — including one Republican — which is exactly how King voted on the Ramadan and Diwali resolutions."

Edited on Tue Dec-11-07 10:59 PM by mycritters2
Dear Mr. Weller,

As a Christian pastor, I'm irate that you and others in the House took time from things THAT MATTER to vote on a resolution declaring the Christian faith and Christmas important.

My faith is no more or less important to me or anyone else because Congress says it is. It is NOT your job to affirm my faith. If you want to demonstrate how important the Christian faith is to you, here are a few ways to do that:

Honor the Prince of Peace by ending this ridiculous war.

Take serious Jesus' admonitions to care for children by fully funding S-CHIP.

Follow Jesus' teachings to care for "the least of these" by rebuilding New Orleans' Lower Ninth Ward.

Think hard, surely you can see other needs more important than this resolution.

Mostly, though, you and Steve King and the other sponsors of this unconstitutional resolution should consider Jesus' teaching to the Pharisees that one should not trumpet ones faith on the street corner, but rather pray in private.

Oh, and Christianity doesn't need your approval. So, thanks but no thanks.

Happy Holidays,
< Rev. Critters[br />First Congregational UCC
